GPU client sluggishness

Whenever GPU client is running the whole desktop becomes very sluggish, "my computer" takes 3 secs to open up, shadows when dragging windows around...etc.

Anyone having the same problem?? or is there something I'm missing??

I'm running the 5.91 console client with catalyst 6.11 on my X1800XT @ stock 3D speed.

Also it is managing about 17mins per frame  , does that sound right for 1800XT?? I know it is supposed to be a lot slower than 1900XT but damn!

Merry Christmas OCUK :)

If it's a 256MB card then that's fairly common (although in your case it does sound quite severe)

Even my X1900XT-512MB suffered a little lag when windows was trying to do fancy stuff - I minimised this by turning off a few of the fancy effects which I didn't need and which weren't really working properly anyway due to the lag
Right-click "My Computer", then select "Properties", then "Advanced" tab and where it says "Performance" click on the "Settings" button - you should then get a list of tick boxes to allow you to turn off particular effects.

I've turned off (unticked) the following:

Animate windows...
Fade or slide menus...
Fade or slide tooltips...
Fade out menu items...
Slide open combo boxes
Slide taskbar buttons
Smooth scroll list boxes

None of which really enhance my enjoyment of WinXP anyway and seems to help performance quite a bit while the GPU is busy

Also since the GPU client uses a fair bit more system RAM than the normal CPU client you might want to just check you're not running low on system RAM (would cause similar slowdowns when opening new programs/windows)

edit: I don't remember what others have posted for their frame times but since the X1800XT has only 1/3 of the pixel shaders of the X1900XT it doesn't seem that far off the mark if that's at stock

Thanks!

Just tried turning off those performance options and the system is slightly more responsive now, although it is still sluggish when dragging windows around and opening new applications. Yeah I did notice it takes up about 200Mb of memory.

Oh well I think I might just run the GPU client at night and normal CPU clients when I'm using the computer.

Sounds like a plan - they have 6 day final deadlines so you'll easily make that, shouldn't even have a problem getting them back in time for the 3 day preferred deadline :)

edit: I usually find my system gets sluggish after a long period of framed browsing in firefox - damned leaky memory POS :o

Clearly Opera for the win then. I just wish gmail worked better with it :(
Well I'll probably stick with firefox for now since all you have to do is close it down every few hours and start fresh - it doesn't seem to be as leaky as it used to be with v1.5
Also v2.0.0.1 seems to have stopped the random browser crashes, it just pauses for a few seconds every now and then :p

Almost tempted to try out IE7

It's very good actually. No complaints from me.

Really there's nothing different between IE7, FF and Op any more. Just rendering "differences" which make website design a pain.

And a hate of Opera by gmail for some reason

I hate IE7. It is trying to be FF and fails because MS can't do anything right even when they are copying :p

I used it for about a week and something just grated so much... everything just felt....wrong.

So now I just have IETab for FF :D

As for laggy Windows... if you were l337 like me you would have themes turned off too [including the service]. Granted the grey is a little plain, but to be honest how often do you sit looking at the task bar or the title bar in windows.

That's the fanboy in you talking mate  . Everyone has been brainwashed to hate IE, with good reason I might add, as IE6 was (is) abysmal.

I like colour tbh :D

Used to have it themeless, then I decided it was pointless for a few megs mem saved. I can spare 45MB (explorer.exe right now) thanks :)

IE7 has caused me no end of woe - really doesn't like our onsite proxy/mail/data server at work one bit.
Mind you opera (which one of my staff keep instailing as a default and wonders why he can access some of our IE based software  ) is not perfect either. Great for home but will not fully intergrate with MS server / some of our specialised work programmes.

Nah, I honestly gave IE7 my best shot because I really get fed up with FF eating memory up. I just don't like IE7.

And I don't suffer from fanboism thank you so very much!

I refuse to install IE7 since it forced its way onto a housemates computer and somehow disabled the computers ability to connect to the internet.

Took me a good hour to get that to reconnect. Still dont really know how it managed that.

I fix trucks for a living and the DAF trucks dealer website has this as a splash screen:eek:
Attention: Download problems with Internet Explorer 7.0
Due to problems with downloads of files from Dealernet with Internet Explorer version 7.0, we advise to not download and install Internet Explorer 7.0
