GPU Clocking - help

Hello

i wonder if any one can help me. i have an r9 390 and have been playing with clocking my system. here is what i have done thus far

i have tweaked the GPU already which is a Powercolor r9 390
added 9% to volts
GPU Clock from 1010mhz to 1080mhz
memory clock speed from 1500mhz to 1610mhz.

i have done this using the overdrive feature of the AMD Crimson drivers.

from reading online people are using the MSI Afterburner and setting both the Power limit to +50% and the Volts to +100

why is this? and is that safe?

i hate adding additional software so looking to see what i can do or replicate via the Crimson software

the option i get are

1) GPU Clock = Percentage
2) Power Limit = Percentage
3) Memory Clock = mhz
Fan Speed = Percentage

where do i find the volts part that is in Afterburner?

i want tog et the best out of my system so happy to push it more than i have currently

Increasing power limits just allows the card to draw the power it needs without throttling. Setting it to extreme levels won't let it draw extreme voltage, just let it draw the current it needs without being tied to a maxium power draw target (and who cares for that?)

I wouldn't recommend just maxing the voltage without putting any thought into it though.

OK cool so using the amd crimson i don't see volts option just the power limit. If I whack that to flat out. Then I start to work on the core clock a little at a time until its crashed and then drop it back a smidge. Then increase memory clock or memory clock first?
 
hmm cant find that setting at all i go through the settingand eventually found additional settings that took me to a new window like the old driver dashboard where you use to OC but its just dusokay things in there now and presets

i cant find this compatability propertise
 
Agh OK makes sense was using the crimson over drive.

So with the volts left stock as you can't change them in crimson but with the power limited set to +50% I have now got the following stable

Core clock from 1010mhz to 1090mhz
Memory clock from 1500 to 1650mhz.

From reading online increasing the voltage on my card will only get me to 1140mhz core and 1700mhz memory

So think I'll stick where I am now. Maybe revisit the CPU side again

Well after testing it all day it dealt with everything lovely. Thought I'd boot up an old game that the internal card xould probably handle (game was Syberia) and it crashed with 5 mins. Lol. Realbench 3dmark all passed but this hump a jink it crashed on. Went back to my first clock in post.

Did some comparison tests in 3d mark and my less clocked was better on 3dmark so guess I'll stick with that then
 
nah i dont have them on PC Ps4 i do but that wont help here :)

standard GPU i get 29250 ish on 3dmark skydive
1090/1650 clock got me 30100 on same test
1080/1610 clock gets me 30300 on same test

no ideam what an extra 200 really means

on real bench im getting better results aswell 89577 compared to 8895x cant remember the last digit.

im guessing as im using crimson i havent adjust the voltage so this is probably a good clock for now. guess i need to decide now if i get MSI Afterburner and try the voltage stuff but how much more am i likely to get when i best i have seen is 1150/1700 and im at 1080/1610

am i chasing numbers again that dont really mean much in day to day stuff of boot up start steam and play assetto corsa
 
It's probably dropping the memory clock that's giving you better scores as there are less errors that need correcting
 
agh ok cool. so would upping the voltage give it more juice to stop those errors or doesnt it work like that ?

ill grab a graph tonight i am in the office today so cant do it now
 
Right, so normally, core and memory voltage are different things.

On 290(x)s (and probably 390(x)s as they are pretty much the same thing) upping core voltage DOES help you stabilise memory overclocks for some reason.
 
OK cool so silly question time let's say it clocks to 1150/1700 what is that likely to see on 3dmark 1000 increase in score.granted its probably unknown but is there much to be found or we talking minimal

If big difference I might try themsi afterburner
