Guys, I know that most CPU's (e.g. Conroe) have inbuilt automatic throttling so that if a certain temp is reached it throttles down to prevent damage to the core, but do GPU cores also have the same auto-throttle features ? (I'm most interested to find out if the G80 has such a feature)
 
Nvidia's have throttled back for years. 6800's for example throttle at 120 degrees. 7900's appear to throttle back at 110 degrees. You can normally find the current (and throttle temps) within the Nvidia control panel.

i want to do a bit of overclocking with rivatuner, but just wanted to make sure that at least some failsafe measures are in place ;)
 
Throttling is indeed at a very high temperature and most videocards also have dynamic fan control increasing the fan speed when the core gets hotter.
 
With my ATi x1900 I used to rely upon the great ATi Tray Tools OSD module to show me GPU/memory temps and the associated fan duty cycle relating to those temps.

I'm finding it hard with my 8800GTX to monitor temps and fan duty as I cannot find an app which will show me an OSD whilst running full screen D3D/GL apps.

What is the best way of monitoring these variables ? Would RivaTuner provide this for me ? I just want to apply a moderate overclock whilst also keeping an eye (at least initially) upon temps/fan.
 
Rivatuner can log the temp and fan duty cycle in the background (and perhaps even in the system tray but not sure)

When I first got my 8800GTS I would have Rivatuner logging in the background while playing a game to see the temperature curve.

Thanks, I had been trying NTune up until now, but not being getting on with it too well.

Does the G80 only have the one thermal diode on the GPU ? I remember with my X1900 I also had another temp readout, which I believe was indicative of the temp the memory was being run at ?
 
There is an "ambient temperature" reading but no idea where that is (or it could be with my 7800GT I can't remember)
