GPU/CPU limitation?

wouldnt of thought it'd be either, pretty much even if anything, if i was to upgrade either though it would be the graphics card (though not until a new generation is released obviously)

Using 1600X1050 for gaming is my rigg more likely to be CPU or GPU limited?

Q6600
8800GTX

Jesus, you manage to play @ 1680x1050 with that lowly spec?
I'd say you're gonna be limited by both - you need an upgrade, boyo!

lollercopters.

You can't get much further CPU wise, just the Q6850 which is overkill anyway. I don't think you have a limitation!

Your computer is rubbish. Please send the parts to me, so that I may ensure that they will be disposed of in a responsible manner.

I've got a quad at 3.6/8800gtx & find it very limited by the 8800gtx in so far as benchmarks go faster by overclocking the 8800 rather than squeezing more out of the cpu.
Some games like WIC are only singlecore so may go faster with a higher clocked duelcore but at least UT3/COD4 are multithreaded :)
I play at my native res of 1360x768 (30% <1280x1024) & can just manage new games at full quality / >60 fps.

There's no point in upgrading if you already have a 3.6 Ghz Dual Core Ashley. Not yet you may as well wait for Penryn before going Quad.

You'll notice no difference at all in any games, except SupCom.

O.k well I took the risk (£100 upgrade) and got my Q6600.

I'm very pleased with the performace.
I obtained another 1500K points in 3D mark 06 with everything at stock over my E6600.

Overclocking wise my [email protected] and GTX@660/1000 pulled 12455 - 06 3D marks (pritty much the limit)

My [email protected] and GTX@660/1000 managed 13622 - 06 3D Marks (still a little more to push yet, 14k?).

Oh and my Windows CPU index score went from 5.8 to 5.9, my E-Penis is raging! :D

This is just benching though, games I can agree there wont be a great deal of difference although WIC increased by 5/6FPS, so I guess its just a little future proofing *thinks about Crysis*

Indeed, I did a test in Source and got 212fps with 8800GTS 320 oc'd to 580/1350/880 using 1680x1050 4xAA 16xAF max everything else.

I then put the Gfx card at stock and got 195fps in the same test.

I had my CPU at 2.4GHz stock for this test and with the CPU at 2.7GHz (1200fsb) the difference is zilch.

Fairly Modern games are now more GPU bound than ever before if you have a c2d/c2q cpu tbh.

Because of this I run everything stock now, my system runs cooler, quieter and I see no difference in Windows. Sure I lost 2 seconds exactly of processing time in Photoshop but hey, I have 2 seconds to spare!

i still use my trusty E6600 which is at 3.6 and stable as a mountain. my 2 cards are at 630/1010 and i play at 1600x1200 and sometimes 2048x1536 and have never been limited by either, this cpu is simply the best buy ive ever done in computing lol.

doubt ill upgrade until i upgrade my cards tbh.
