GPU Dilemma

Hi people,

I'm having a dilemma at the moment on which graphics card to get due to so many recent new releases from Nvidia and it's just confused me.
I had my heart set on a 1024meg Gainward Bliss 8800GT and now I hear the new GTS's are so much better and some people tell me that I'm better with a GTX.
I currently have a amd 4600x2, 2 gig of ram, radeon x1900xt and a crossfire asus mobo. I wanna play all my games at 1680 * 1050 and my current graphics card is beginning too struggle in certain games.
Any ideas on which card would be most suitable to me? I have about £250 to spend maximum.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!
ICE

PS. I know my mobo won't let me do SLI but I plan on going down that route at a later stage sometime next year.

That would be happy playing games at 1680x1050 (depending which games you play of course) but for that extra comfort factor I personally feel that 512MB is where its at.

Then of course there is the *cash back* you will get from your classic socket 939 kit! Could maybe scrape yourself together a 512MB 8800GT in that budget also. The spec in the photo above would be a lot better than you might imagine, Its a tough one as the sub £100 HD3850 does hold a certain appeal and the benchmarks look good for that price.

Certainly can't complain. Betters my old 7950GX2 and very nearly matches my old 2900XT too. Awesome card for £90.

As Big.Wayne states though. 512mb is where it's at. I'd have got one if there weren't only 256 versions available at the time.

You could get £150-£170 for the AMD system you presently have so that could be added to the budget you've set. That way you could get a GT, GTS and possibly even a GTX which i can thoroughly vouch for. Most powerful GPU i've ever owned.

I have an AMD X2 4600+ and 2gb; a few months ago I also owned an x1950 XT ;)
I upgraded to the 8800 GTX when it was still over £320, so it really is a good deal now.

I haven't had first hand experience, but from benchmarks, I haven't really seen worthy performance increase by upgrading from an AMD X2 to a C2D, since you have to spend an extra few hundreds for new motherboards, OS, ram etc on top of the new CPU.

Lol your a dude, I tried so hard to get that card, in my mind I was thinking 'HD3850, HD3850, HD380' but when I opened my mouth it came out '8800GT 512MB'

I will be buying one for sure now because I think it has a nice price to performance ratio, I know a lot of people in the real world who like PC gaming but don't have a lot of money so I think the baby Radeon would fit the bill nicely.

Thats right and another option is just keep to the orginal budget and pocket the cash

Hey thanks for all the replies people, I think I'm going to go with the 8800gtx mainly because I want to play with max graphics in most games and I amn't getting quad core till next year :(
On the plus side it will go nicely with my zalman gt1000 :D
