Hey guys,

Was just playing killing floor earlier, when my computer froze and blue vertical lines appeared down the screen. I had to hard reboot, and it now won't post and the monitor is just searching for a signal. It occassionally posts by itself after a while, but with lots of white vertical lines. It's a Radeon 4870 1gb.

Any suggestions?

If not, looks like it's new graphics cards time! :(

Anyway, I've been out of the loop for a while and not sure what to choose as my psu is only a corsair vx450. I would like something more powerful than my current gpu but as cheap as I can get within reason.

Processor is an E7400

Cheers guys! :)

Update: It will only boot in safe mode, not normal mode.

I'm aware my cpu is a bottleneck, but really can't afford to upgrade right now. What if I found an upgrade to my cpu on MM?

I rarely play killing floor, mainly Ns2, and grid 2 when I get it. Would probably like to play bf3 or 4 and a few other newer games but not on highest settings.

BF3 / 4 you really will need to upgrade that CPU, if you can find a used Sandy Bridge i5 and Motherboard cheap enough that would be great, failing that an older Lynfield i5 is fine, or a Lynfield i7 / Bloomfield i7 are very good and going cheap, if you can find one.

I'm running a Bloomfield i7 paired with a 7870XT (Tahiti LE) on BF4 and its perfect.

I thought it might have too, out of curiosity, what sort or system would I be able to get without upgrading my psu?

With those GPU's i listed i would say an i5 of sorts, the most power hungry on those GPU's will suck up anything from 200 to 250 Watts depending on how much you have them overclocked, and they are capable of overclocking an enormous amount, having said that i don't think they pull any more power than your 4870, the 260X certainly less.

Now, the reason i say i5 is because the i7's i listed suck up a lot of power on thier own, much more than the i5's.

I think a Sandy or Lynfield i5 is perfectly fine paired with the 270 on your PSU, with an i7 its probably ok to, but pushing the limit.

Hmm, I may start gathering resources off of MM and perhaps see if I can conjure up a cheap 2nd hand build, or would you say thats a bit risky? Id be hapy with an i5 and a r7 260x I think.

There is always a risk buying used, it would be idiotic to tell you there isn't.

I don't buy GPU's 2'nd hand as they can easily go wrong, or have problems that are not always immediately apparent.

CPU's are different, either they work, or they are broken, they also have a much greater reliable life span, usualy if the CPU works when you first put it in it will continue to do so, you don't see many stories of CPU's coming to the end of a natural life, often they go on for so long they simply get thrown away not because something is wrong with it, but because its just not upto the job anymore.

Motherboards, no reason why a good one shouldn't go on for many many years, but there is risk as there is with GPU's, just less.

If your Buying from the MM its usually a trusted member selling, if they have wronged a buyer they are banned from there.

On the Bay, read through their feedback. particularity negative feedback if they have any. see what it was about, if they have sold hardare before and its positive then you should be alright, stating the obvious.

What if I just got a new gpu, and upgraded to a decent quad core that fits my socket? Would that perform well?

Well thats what you can try, get the GPU see how it goes with the existing CPU, from that you should be able to gouge if the same CPU with twice as many cores will work for you.

Doubling the cores in BF3 / 4 does scale. not quiet linear but not far off.

Well, I think Ill get a new gpu, perhaps the R9 270 if I have the funds, and take it from there, as I'll use that gpu anyway if I do decide to upgrade.

Thanks for your help humbug, much appreciated :)
