Hi guys,

As some of you may know, i have recently acquired a 24" OcUK (DGM) screen.

So now as you can imagine, some games, such as COD4 and Crysis are really struggling along.

I will be purchasing a new card come the new year, and i'm after a card that offers performance at 1920 x 1200 with some nice detail, and something that will last.

So far i'm thinking GTX, but not sure i can justify as much as £250 or so..... i remember buying an X1800XT back at £186 and swore that was the most i would spend on a graphics card.

Do you see any other options running at such a high res?...... ultimately i think the GTX is better suited for the resolution. Bear in mind i'm not a hardcore FPS player, but i do like playing single player games like COD4 and Crysis, though this machine isnt built "for crysis" so how this one games runs is not the be all and end all. I do play BF2142 to, but this runs maxed out at the moment (at 1024 x 768 - stupid game won't let me change it).

Any suggestions or comments guys?....

8800GTS 512mb is apprently as good if not better than the GTX in crysis, and in other games is only a few fps behind it normally. Theres one for just over £200 in this week only.

At that resoultion it is memory bandwidth that is needed so a GTX would be good. In terms of new games shader speed plays a lot with how fast a card is, hence why the new gts is just as fast as the gtx in crysis. For 1920 * 1200 and for under £185 it would have to be the gt. Im not sure how well it will cope at that rez with high detail though.

Well my 8800GT runs UT3/COD4/GOW/TF2 all superbly at 1920x1080 so I'm sure it won't be much worse at 1920x1200, if you can't stretch to a GTX the GT would be a good purchase.

I run CoD4 with 4xAA, UT3/GOW with none and TF2 with 16xCSAA, they all run great.

For me this has 8800gt written all over it. Just amazing bang for buck value and very near 8800gts/gtx performance for considerably less.

yes but the gtx does show it's leaed over the gt/gts at higher res'

i suggest you have a look on the mm or something and try get a nice gtx second hand cheaply ;)

GT handles everything but Crysis just fine at that res, I've been playing Bioshock, UT3, CoD4, NFS: Pro Street etc. with no problems.

GT/GTS for everything except Crysis.

I have an 8800GT and the 24" DGM and everything runs great @ 1920x1020 apart from Crysis which runs great at 1680x1050.

The DGM scales well so if you have to knock the res down on anything it'll still look great.

I shouldn't think so, probably be 5-6 fps slower but still playable. I use 4xAA in most of them (UT3 excluded, 2x in that) so you would just have to drop that to 2x or none.

I take it my older 8800gts 640mb would struggle with those games at that res?

Na it'd still be fine. To be honest at 1900x1200 I personally aren't bothered about AA. I don't run any with UT3 (like it to be as smooth as possible) and there's hardly any jaggies noticeable unless you get up close, can't notice any on the weapon models anyway.

Definately would prefer AA to be on..... high detail would be nice, though crysis is not vital....

GT i think will be too hot, i only have low rpm fans so a dual slot is going to be better, it needs to be at least GTS.....

Only question is, will this cut it for long or will it start to struggle early on running 1920 x 1200 on some games, will the GTX give more life... and if so how much, and is the price difference worth it.

At that resolution you need memory bandwith first, memory second, tough a combination of the two would be best. Thus a 8800GTX would be your best bet; see if you can't pick one up second hand or go for the OcUK value. The 8800GT / GTS will really struggle at 1920 x 1200 in Crysis, but if that is all you can afford then get the OcUK value version and overclock.

About BattleField; you can force the game to run at 1920 x 1200 with the command line tweak below. This is for BF2 (which is what I have), but unless I'm mistaken BF2142 is an updated version which uses the same engine:

C:\...\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1920 +szy 1200

You can also try Widescreenfixer.

the 512mb GTS performs better than the GTX in crysis though.

Ah ok, yeah just saw, its generally better on all res's but if you have any aa/af on the GTX takes over.

Yup, but I'd still get the GT - it's a superior card overall with lower power consumption and better HD decoding. At the end of the day Crysis is one game; the GT pretty much rocks in any other game, even at 1920 x 1200.

In fact I'll be upgrading to a Q6600 and a 8800GT in January to go with my 24" screen... I'm not so bothered about AA / AF, just want to do my occasional gaming at the native resoution. Can't wait :D

Even now at 1440x900, fraps says over one entire game against bots, i get about 55fps average on UT3, and a 24 player online game in TF2 i get about 80-100.

Now TF2 is good, but the UT3 demo i would have thought would be better.

Opted for the ATI 3870 XT 512mb in the end, spent the cash saved on other parts for the 2nd rig.

£130 inc VAT..... thats a good saving compared to even ocuk prices for the 3870 price....

Sorry ocuk could not bring myself to spend extra just to use you this time, think i saved a good amount just shopping elsewhere....

Runs everything i have on high quality, though some games i have to scale down to a lower res, but i don't mind, this monitor scales really really well.

Very happy with the performance for the price..... feel i got more for my money then when i brought an x1800xt for £186 some time ago...

Next thing on my list will be an aftermarket cooler..... only once this one drives me insane.. :D
