so i currently have a i7-4790 paired with a 1070ti. And I’m wondering realistically what’s the best GPU I could pair with it at 1080? 1440p? And 4K (all 60hz displays).

Thank you

Tbh you'll gain with what ever gpu you upgrade to, its just very dependent on the game/resolution as to if and how much of a bottleneck the 4790 will be.

If it were me i would buy the fastest my budget would allow, it doesn't make sense to 'match' a gpu to a cpu.

I'd have thought a 1070ti would be more than enough at 1080 for any game right now. Especially when you have a 60hz screen you can only play at 60fps. You could probably play at 1440 at lower mid settings OK on some games.

When i was running a 4790k@4,8ghz i still saw some cpu bottlenecking happen with a 1080ti. Wasn't that bad in the titles i played but it was there. That was while playing at 1440p@165hz. Usually the average fps was fine but you could see it in the 1% lows. A random stutter here, one there.

On the road....
Running a Zotac 1080ti Amp Extreme with a 4790K @4.8 which I upgraded to from a 4790 (Non K) everything bar RDR2 @4K ultra is fine for me,I don't lose sleep over RDR2 given you can't max it and get good FPS with a 2080ti.....
Back when I was running 1080p I had an Asus 1070 Turbo which was ample tbh (with a 4790) latterly I ran a second 1070 in SLI in Surround (5760x1080) and the 1070SLI setup didn't struggle at all, it was actually quicker than my current 1080ti!

I'm waiting for the next gen to drop and hopefully bag a second 1080ti for SLI (the titles I play support it well) , at the moment although its getting long in the tooth, I don't yet see a worthwhile performance increase from a new cpu given how well an overclocked 4790K still cuts it and the cost of a new CPU, RAM & Motherboard.......

The best upgrade I did with my setup was swapping the 4790 for a 4790K, adding a cheap watercooler to the CPU and overclocking it, it gave the 1080ti a noticable improvement especially @ 4K.

I certainly wouldn't worry about dropping the fastest card you can afford in your current setup, and save for a new cpu etc when its a bit more cost / performance acceptable, thats my plan anyway! :)

I'd agree with this, although we are both running at 1440p which helps big time. But the 4790k is giving me a real dilemma, because I really want a 3700x..

I use a 2080ti with mine as i only run 4k 120hz, I seen someone playing Darksiders 2 on a i9 9900k or something and we all drop to 100fps at a certain point. Some games infact a lot of games the combo is fine.

Indees if it were not i would have upgraded but i am content until Ryzen 4000.

A 4 core CPU even with hyperthreading is nowhere close a 6 core which can be found for a similar price. Problem is that you also have to get memory and motherboard but I think you are at a good place now for an upgrade that will last you many years.
