I was going to get a HD 2900 XT on launch but I held out until I upgraded fully. Now that I have, I kind of want to change the X800XL i have.

I am not really much of a gamer, but I would probably game more with a decent GPU. I want a card that flies in HD and looks gorgeous in 2D.

I am inclined to the HD 2900 XT (can get one for around £200). As far as I can see, it seems to be doing quite well with current drivers.

I don't want any higher than £200 as it is a waste of money for me.

LCD is a Formac 20.1" (1600x1200) and I also use a R74 32" (1360x768)

Do I go HD 2900 XT?

i have a 8800gtx in vista and its fine. no fan control in the drivers though.

Nvidia have just released some new ones (26/07) but I havent got round to installing them yet

HD2900XT, the drivers are excellent - running mine with Vista x64 and i'm getting excellent performance and stability - and it's now faster than the 8800GTS. :)

For every bad 8800GTX driver I can post 10 bad 2900XT ones. Just go for the 8800s they have already proven themselves have they not? The 2900s are still trying to stand on two legs.

Please don't post lies.

That's all well and good, but it doesn't instill confidence when different drivers work in different ways for different people! Aren't they all the same cards?

I mean lets say the OP gets an 8800GTS - he will get the slower card anyway, and what drivers would work best for him? It's anyone's guess!

Just pop the 7.7's on with a 2900XT and enjoy the performance.

Maybe not everyone is trying the same drivers with the same games? :o

Huh?

Why would that matter? Point is, it seems nVidia drivers are almost fussy about what else you have in your system - it's the only reasonable explanation.

And either way, ATi drivers don't do this.

I've heard that 4gb + 8800 + Vista 64 + Soundblasters dont mix well...is this true? I have seen a lot of posts around with this combo causing problems.
