I've been unsure on what todo with my current system which I built a few years back but now I think I may aswell keep it as is apart from a few new bits instead of a complete new build,

all I need is a bit of help deciding which graphics card to get that won't be outdated a month down the line lol :)

I've got around £280 to spend on the graphics card and want it to be able to play all the latest games at ease
Been reading loads of good stuff about the nvidia gtx-970 but after looking there's loads of different models..
This is where I'm stuck, but open to advice as always

I'm running a i5 3570k at stock but gonna overclock it as soon as I get my card.

waiting for my new ram and a few more 120 fans. So that side is sortEd.

r9 390 as seems like your keep the card for a couple of years, thats where the 8gb will come in handy, unlike the 970 which has 3.5gb +500mb slow ram.

Depends on what resolution you game at.

Don't believe the 3.5gb hype train. Look at it this way. If it was a problem they would not be selling.

gtx 970 is and will be great for 1080p gaming for quite a while yet,,,im getting one in a month or so I think,i prefer NVidia cards although the r9 390 does seem good bang for buck

Don't buy the 390 because of 8GB VRAM over 3.5+0.5. Buy it because it's the faster card at 1080p and the gap widens as resolutions increase. The extra VRAM is nice, and a deal-sweetener, but if it was slower than a 970 I'd not advise it. However, it's faster and the gap is likely to increase over time so it's an easy pick while it remains slightly cheaper or the same price. (If the 970 becomes cheaper by any reasonable margin then this advice may of course change again :D)

I wouldn't go for a reference card myself as one from asus or similar will be faster than reference

Have a look at The DigitalFoundry Face Off Thread they got a side by side review of 970 and 390 on some video's it is top of page 2.

I noticed the new 970 v 390 in Far cry Primal video yesterday. I was surprised by how much of a pasting the 970 took. It's normally quite close at 1080p with it going either way but more often to the 390 however in that it had a double figure advantage and even with a fully overclocked 970 it did not catch the 390.

They did a real decent job when upgrading Hawaii to Grenada.

Anyway

@ OP,
I'd go for this or this

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/sapp...rd-with-backplate-11244-01-20g-gx-373-sp.html

Don't forget the 970's often suffer from coil whine.

No more than the 390, we get to hear more about them because they sell in much higher numbers.

OP either the AMD 390 or the NVidia 970 will be great cards, for your needs.

Get R9 390. You cannot go wrong. Very powerful card far superior to GTX970.

if you can stretch an extra £20 at least you might be able to pick up a 980, 50is mile radius from my address on gumtree found a 980 for £300 though its sold now, the cheapest one now is an msi at £330, but its in cornwall
