gpu involvement in rendering

a friend of mine is about to build his first rig. hes got a decent budget but doesnt know where to focus his money. he doesnt game but needs a powerful rig as he does a lot of rendering, CAD work and photoshop, multitasking etc. does gpu play a part in performance here or is it just down to RAM and CPU
 
Pretty much all cpu and ram. There may be a few programs that do put some load on the cpu, but I can't think of any at the moment.
 
Core 2 duo and 2GB of ram would be ideal. My old system used to power up photoshop in about 20seconds, it now boots up in about 3-4 seconds flat with the below system in my sig...
 
Probably not unless your doing really really high quality stuff.

I've done renders that have taken a good Hour on my server (dual xeons with 2 gig ram) and they haven't come close to maxing out 2 gig.
Depends what you are using it for really.
