Will the XFX GeForce 6800 GS 256MB GDDR3 work in my son's ancient Abit KR7-A RAID/XP1600+ setup? Seems a great price at £49.99 & hopefully a decent upgrade from his GF3. He will eventually have a decent skt939 system to use it in.

Its an AGP card.
XFX GeForce 6800 GS 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail

I don't see why it wouldn't work but just thought I'd ask anyway.

I assume it's AGP 8x, check the specs for your MB if it's AGP 8x you're good to go. Make sure you have a decent power supply though (300 W at least i think)

Even if the mobo is AGP 4X then it should still work. Technically all agp gfx cards are backwards compatible in that way.

I thought it was the other way around - mobo's supporting AGP 8x also support AGP 4x..

I think the mobo is AGP x4. Presumably the card will just downgrade itself to match? The card will be used with an ASRock dual sata in a couple of months anyway

Yes the card should downgrade no problem. Essentially it's the same as changing your mobos AGP speed to 4X, the card just sees the max speed and runs at that.
