so...

currently running

I5 4670K (doesnt overclock no matter what i try)
16gb ddr3
MATX mobo
780ti

if i upgrade my gpu to something like the 5700 it will get bottlenecked by the cpu.

if i upgrade cpu (id need mobo and ram) but it would cost approx the same price as the gpu upgrade. but then i wouldnt be able to upgrade gpu.

which would you go for?

I'm guessing you use it for gaming? What kind of games are playing? Could get away with running the 780Ti for a bit and upgrade the system to DDR4

Play anything from counter strike and hearthstone to overwatch, gears 5 and soon, modern warfare.

Do you guys think the CPU route would be better then? Would a 2600 be a good enough upgrade or would I need to go 3600?

Only 1080p gaming but 144hz monitor.

simple answer would be to get a 4770k/4790k and a 1080ti as well on the members market
last few 1080ti went from £300-390

The main question here is more to do with wether it's better to upgrade CPU first or gou
Both. With a budget of £300...
Vega 56 for <£200 on the MM, is about 15% slower than the 5700...
And a 4790k for £100, and you can sell your 4670k for ~£40-50
