Hi all,

So ive been out of the PC loop for a few years and went to console gaming, i'm now looking at coming back to PC but i need to upgrade my rig. I have a 4K Screen with HDMI 2.1, my current specs are:

AMD 3600

X570 Mobo

RTX 3060ti 8GB

16 GB Ram DDR 4

Because i'm running at 4k native im looking at getting a 7800 XT 16GB and upgrading CPU to a 5700X, now i realise the 7800 XT is 1440p card but for 4K ive read its ok for 4K 60 FPS? Im aware i might get a bottleneck but do you think this will give me 4K 60 FPS in the majority of games?

Obviously to get the max benefit i need to spend more but my £ is around 7800 XT and 5700X levels. As i said ive been away from being a PC enthusiast for a few years so i'm a bit rusty to the current specs these days hence why i'm here :)

Thank you.

This video has some numbers you might find helpful, but obviously the GRE is a faster card:

If you search on YouTube, the game, the res and the card, you'll get examples for how most popular cards & games perform together.

and upgrading CPU to a 5700X
For 4K, I'd be inclined to leave this be for awhile and get a 4070 Super or 7900 GRE. The difference isn't huge, but that extra grunt comes in handy when trying to hit 60 fps, though you'll still need FSR or DLSS in some games.

Hi and thanks. i can stretch to the GRE i think, would the CPU be somewhat ok to pair with it for minimum bottleneck for the money i have?
It depends on the game really.., you're going to lose performance, but I'd take the extra GPU power over the new CPU, because CPUs like the 5600/5700X and 5700X3D should only get cheaper used as everybody upgrades to AM5 whereas once you dump £400 on the XT that's gone.

Ok thank you, im guessing when looking to hit 60 FPS at 4k the extra grunt from the GRE will make up for a slower CPU and the bottleneck wont be noticed so much for 60 FPS?

The reason I'm suggesting a bit extra for the 7900 GRE or 4070 Super (..maybe with a nice deal on BF) is just to hit 60 fps really, the difference is not that big with the 7800 XT, but to play at 4K you'll need every bit of power you can get.

Some games are going to be choppy on the 3600 due to the relatively low single thread performance, but like I said: that's cheap and easy to change a few months down the line, whereas your investment in the graphics card is not (at least, not without losing some cash in the swap).

If you can stomach waiting, you may get a better value midrange card for ~£500 from RDNA4 in a few months.

Note the 4070 Super has DLSS which is still considered a superior upscaler from a quality perspective.

Ok, i understand, thanks for the advice i appreciate it. Im leaning towards the GRE because of the extra VRAM especially at 4K. I'm waiting till Friday for deals on GPUs and the 5700X, hopefully get something a tad cheaper
