Hi peoples,

Just need some help on deciding wich GPU to get, I am building a brand new system, with Asus X670E Hero, 7900X, 32GB Ram. I will be using the 4K 140Hz 42" Oled Asus PG42UQ. It has hdmi 2.1 and display port 1.4.

I will be using the pc for watching 4k content and hate buffering etc when watching online content. The pc will not really be used for gaming.

What GPU would you use? I was thinking RTX 4080 or 7900XTX, are these adequate or overkill?

Neither.

The 4080/7900XTX are overpriced and under performers for the stupid money they're asking.

Grab one of the OcUK 6900XT deals currently on offer for £699. More power than you'll ever need based on your usage scenario, heck for what you want it for I wouldn't even go much past a 3060Ti, TBH.

You don't need a high end GPU just for media, especially if it's just streaming. Even that 7900X is complete overkill. Buffering will depend more on your actual internet connection. Just grab the cheapest GPU with AV1 decoding if you want to be future proof, the media engine is the same as the high end GPUs. You can drop the CPU to a 7600X and it'll still be more than enough if software decoding is required. Spend that money on wiring the PC to the router if it's not cabled up already via ethernet, and if you're not already on a fast plan, FTTP or anything else that can provide ultrafast speeds.

Wow must be trolling? You can just buy Nvidia shield or firestick 4K that play 4k easily, buffering is more to do with internet or local network

With the money saved could buy bigger better oled TV

Will I not need a powerful GPU to run a PG42UQ 42” 4k OLED Monitor 144Hz?

I’m going to hold out for abit and might pickup the new white edition 4070's or a 4080 if it goes on sale? Want a low TDP GPU too and decided I don’t want to spend more than £700 max on a gpu.

How good are the integarted graphics on the 7900x CPU? Thinking I might build and use the pc without a GPU, until I find something at a low price?

I have bought the 7900x CPU and 3 M.2 SSD’s as well as one fan so far....! lol...

The PC is to be used as an everyday productivity work PC for the next 10+ years, and only upgrading parts when something goes bad!

I will hopefully connect to internet via cable soon too..... FTTP incoming, still waiting for upgrade in my area, then i’ll upgrade!

New to all this pc building, never built one before, always wanted to build my own pc, let's see how I get on once all parts have been purchased!!

Surely can't be that hard?? :)

As far as I know, it has the same feature set as RDNA 2, supports HDMI 2.1 & DP 2.0 (though boards seem to be 1.4a) and can decode all modern media formats, including AV1.

What exactly does 'productivity' mean? If you're literally just watching 4K content, then I wouldn't buy a graphics card, at least not until you have tested it.

What GPU would I use? the one built into an iPad cos that is literally all you need

For media the integrated graphics on the 7900X is enough since it supports h264/HEVC/VP9/AV1 decoding, will be fine for 4K content. It's still overkill since you don't need that many cores, the CPU will be doing hardly anything thanks to the hardware media decoder on the IGP. You don't need a discrete GPU unless you're gaming or doing any other heavy work that relies on the GPU. The main bottleneck for streaming will still be your internet connection, so if your current connection is slow even with a high end PC you will get buffering still.

However as above productivity will add in another different set of requirements. What exactly is this sort of work and can you list the software you'll be using?

I would be tempted to refund the 7900X for a 7600X but it'll depend on the productivity stuff you'll be doing.

blimey didn't realise this would be enough?
You'll need a 7th-generation Intel Core (Kaby Lake) CPU or newer, or an Nvidia 1x generation GPU may also work (but not always).
