GPU recommendations required plz

Looking at benchmarks, both the RX480 and 1060 have difficulty reaching 60 FPS average at 2560x1440. I would aim for the next price group up if you don't want to have to turn down details on new games.

Yes, it's very noticeable IMO. It makes a huge difference on the desktop and allows for a very fine degree of detail when gaming.

The trade off is that your GPU has to render ~70% more pixels than for 1080p. That may mean that some settings need to be lowered or AA sacrificed.

Ended up buying an MSI 1060 Armour OC 6Gb in the end. Couldn't justify spending £400 on a 1070 or even £300 on the MSI 1060 6Gb Gaming x at £300 for what is essentially the same card!

Anyway have been playing Forza Horizon 3 demo at 1440p and ultra settings and getting 50 to 60fps. Looks the business and son will be over the moon at Christmas.

Older benchmark review of the game here, https://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/gpu_displays/forza_horizon_3_pc_performance_review/7, RX480 has a very slight edge, even more so now I would say with latest drivers since AMD did a great job of improving performance on latest drivers for 480.

Anyway bit of a moot point since you went 1060, btw I went XFX 480 GTR 8GB Black edition(for £259), should be here by Friday :) .

What about in city, I would expect <50fps at ultra?

However yes 1060 with right settings will still see better visuals that the XBone that's locked at 30fps

To be sure either a 1080 or a 1070+Gsync (sorry not sure about your monitor having Gsync).

Example, with a 6850K and 2*TX (Maxwell) I get between 60 and 80 fps at 1440 with everything maxed. This is why I say a 1080.

I have an RX480 running 2560*1080 and it just about copes (thanks to Freesync).

I have a 1060 running 1920*1080 and it's comfortable.

ETA - does depend on settings and game!

Hope this helps!

Seriously ! I thought the 1080 would be for like everything switched on at 4k.

I was thinking more 480 v 1060 and that a 1070 would be a luxury.

For 1440p a 1070 would be ideal but a 6 gb 1060 or 8 gb 480 will do a decent enough job with settings optimised so of you do not want to spend money on a 1070 either of those would be okay, Personally I'd go 480 if I planned on keeping if for 2, 3 or more years and the 1060 if it was to be replaced sooner.

For a 480 there's only one I'd currently consider and that is the XFX GTR,

Out of the 1060's I'd probably go for a Zotac Amp.

Out of the two the 480 is 30 quid cheaper plus it comes with a copy of Civ 6 making it a no brainer.
