GPU tribalism. Is it a thing?

Different peeps will have different feels for brand loyalty i guess.

Personally, i have an intel and nvidia tendency, though if either of those become a clear cut bad choice in price/performance to my perception, i would switch.

Being a die hard fan of any multinational corporation seem like the sign of weak minds being brainwashed by marketing, if you ask me.

CUDA is important to me too as I use video editing software which has accelerated processing because of it. However we should know that AMD has stream processors. The AMD equivalents can accelerate this sort of job just the same way CUDA accelerates jobs. The problem is one of adoption. There needs to be more AMD cards out there for software makers to make use of the hardware. NVidia has done an excellent job in branding tech to the point people want/need "CUDA" or "RTX" which are jobs that can be done with other tech. I acknowledge at the moment "CUDA" or nothing is it, but don't think as a gamer that the lack of "CUDA" in graphics cards is a minus, because it isn't, because AMD do have an alternative.

Having a brand that has this amount of loyalty and domination on a market is not healthy and drives up prices. Ironically I too have a pre-ordered 3080, so I too am part of the problem. CUDA is nothing special but has brand awareness, and that is something we all need to be aware of.

Thanks for the mature post buddy! I was trying my best to get the point across but shouldnt have wasted the energy tbh. ;)

I have used a mixture between AMD, Intel and Nvidia throughout the years. Whatever is best for the money that I'm willing to spend at the given time.

As for character analysis of people that do this sort of thing, well this is just how some of us are. Is it intelligent that supporters of two different football teams in one city can have hate for one another without even knowing the other person? Nobody is perfect, if bias towards a product is a persons worst trait, they're actually doing ok in the grand scheme of things.

For the record, I don't like bias or PJS (purchase justification syndrome) but I somewhat understand it based on other parts of life.

I gave never had brand loyalty in anything, pc, cars, bikes in fact anything. I always go gor the best I can afford after reading loads of reviews, AMD vs Intel vs Nvidia, all the same to me, why buy a slow gpu of the other lot make a faster one

Can’t we all just get along? :D

I’m a little demanding when it comes to purchases but ultimately I just want the best performance for my money, but that doesn’t necessarily mean best VFM. Tried for a 3090 at launch but failed to get one, though that may yet be a blessing in disguise.

Am I alone I’m not caring whether it’s Nvidia or AMD that manufacture your GPU of choice?

Or are there really people that will only buy from a specific manufacturer due to some misplaced brand loyalty?

Not looking to start an argument over which is best, just interested if it’s actually a thing.

Phew, managed to write that without using the dreaded F word once... :p

is it a thing?

you've been a member for 15 years - you should know the answer to that :p

Fair point. :D

I had a massive break from PC gaming that lasted years and the only AMD cards I’ve ever owned were a 9700 Pro and an RX480, had 3-4 Nvidia cards as well, and currently using a 2080Ti that I’ve had since launch. The RX480 is in use by the kids until I replace my card.

As I failed to secure a launch day 3090 and I don’t like pre-orders I’m sitting it out now until AMD release theirs and there’s stock availability of the 3090’s. Then I can make a more informed decision.

However, there always seem to be a few people frothing at the mouth over one brand or the other, and that’s the bit I just don’t get. Both AMD and Nvidia are as bad as each other, shareholders first, profits second, customers third. It’s the way it’s always been I guess but some people get really defensive about their preferred brand, almost like it’s a personal attack on them!
