Hi All,

I am currently running a Radeon HD 4870 (1GB).

Looking to upgrade in someway to improve bf3 and future proof a bit.

Have a Budget of around £150 (could push to £200).

Not sure about Crossfire as never done that before but will listen to advice

Was also thinking about a newer model to Crossfire later

Have been looking at http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-039-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1866

Please let me know your thoughts / advice.

Thanks for your reply.

I would prefer to stick to AMD, I have only ever had one Nvidia card but had no end of problems with it so it put me off them.

I had looked at the product in the link that you posted and I'm thinking it may be worth paying the extra £50 with it being a 2gb card.

Would I be able to CF tham if I got anotehr in March? Like i say never done CF before so i don't know.

Cheers

^For the price difference, I would only be going new for the sake of a few fps.

@ElusiveWarrior, providing you have a CrossFire capable board and minimum 650W quality psu, they will be fine for CrossFire.

Hi Thanks for the replies.

I don't know if mobo is capable if i'm honest. Its Abit IP35.

If it is would it be worth getting another 4870 to crossfire or would i get more performance from the 6950 IceQ X Turbo 2gb?

Cheers

It was the 6870 I was looking at.

Still not sure if i'm able to crossfire though.

I'm guessing the 4870 CF is a no go in most opinions then?

Cheers

I'm not sure if it's a good idea for BF3 unless there has been a driver set released that has fixed the issues me and my friend were having last week?.

I sold my friend my 4870 to add to his 4870 a year ago. After he bought BF3 he called me in a panic thinking his main hard drive that the operating system was on was dying. I told him to come through to mine with his tower and I'd let him try my 6950 (flashed). Well his problems disappeared and he went and bought a Toxic 6950 from OCUK. Problem solved and he's loving it.

I also tried the 4870s in my system and I was seeing the same choppy performances that he was experiencing (we only tried BF3). I changed a few things in registry regarding ULPS which helped a little but still wasn't an enjoyable gaming experience.

So, you can either pick up something cheap second hand that will let you play BF3 until the new AMD 7 series of cards come out (in the next few months I think), then current card pricing might fall and you can pick up a 6950 for a lot cheaper. Saying that, I can't predict what's exactly going to happen. Also it's a long wait when you could be on the battlefield now, hmmm choices lol. I can't run ultra on my 6950 but I can run it fairly high and it looks beautiful even just a little lower than ultra.

Treat yourself or suffer the dreaded wait lol. Do a bit of research though so you make the right choice and at the right time ;).

(edit) Also I used to have the ABIT IP35 Pro. First lane is 16x, second lane is 4x. Stick to one card as that x4 has a performance hit. One more thing, what CPU do you have and is it overclocked?.
