GPU Upgrade Advice Please

Just ran it again and the figures are

54 degrees - 60% - 40% - 797

This is with the core clock at 800
Save the current overclock to one of the profile (so you can fallback to later needed), and try 825MHz next and see if you can run games stable without "driver stopped working crashes" and blue screen crash.

Also what is the current default voltage it is showing?

ok settings on Ultra

61 degrees - 99 - 43 - 824 - 42FPS

The voltage is not showing anything the slider is full to the left.
The voltage slider won't move.

Is that clock stable?

If it is, try 850MHz next. At this clock, you are approaching the point that the GPU may be unstable, and you may get "drivers stopped working" or even bluescreen crash. It nothing to worry about, as it won't actually damage your card just reboot your PC if required (but if it can stay stable at 850MHz on default voltage, then great, and make sure you save it onto one of the profiles).

Next for voltage, click on the "Settings" button, and try to look for "Unlock voltage control" and "Unlock voltage monitoring" under the "General" tab and then click "ok", and see it will enable you to adjust the voltage. You may or may not need to restart MSI Afterburner.

OK 800 was stable have now increased it to 850 that seems fine.

The numbers for 850 are.

69Degrees - 99 - 49 - 851 - Framerate 27 Mem is 1009.

I have unlocked the voltage slider and the voltage reads 962
but I haven't touched it.

Just done another run with settings on Ultra the above was normal.

68 degrees - 99 - 49 - 851 - Framerate 50

Looking good, the frame rate for Ultra setting is clearly going up.

I have found another forum where people use to discuss about overclocking GTX460 1GB, should be good reference for you:
http://www.overclock.net/t/781197/gtx-460-default-voltage-and-max-safe-voltage

It would seem that the max voltage is 1.087, but at that point I would imagine the card/GPU will become a bit on the hot side hitting around 80C, so I would recommend may be going for 1.05v max, and then try jumping the core clock to 900MHz and see if it is stable XD

Also in MSI Afterburner, you can set a custom fanspeed profile (Settings, under the "Fan" tab), so that the cooler's speed will increase accordingly to the temp, base on the profile you set. You should aim at max temp of your GPU may be not exceeding 75C.

Thank you for the info I shall certainly follow it up.

Does this mean I don't need to get a 960 or a 970?
or would either of them still give me more than overclocking
the 460?

Well considering I like Call of Duty I suppose I should be thinking of
a 970 but I am enjoying seeing how much I can get out of the 460.

Yea. You will still benefit with graphic card upgrade, but as I said it would be good for you to learn to overclock while you are still on your GTX460, and see for yourself the different of overclocking vs stock clock on graphic cards make :D

I wouldn't be surprised if the GTX460 at 900MHz would already be giving you smooth enough gameplay experience for Ultra at Eurotrucker :D

So is overclocking all a matter of pushing a card until it crashes then back it off a bit
or is there more to it than that?
More or less yea.

When it start to crash/show signs of instability or you can see some artifacts (multiplay white or colour dots on the screen), you either back off the clock speed a little may be by 10MHz (20MHz if needed), or increase voltage further in attempt to stabilise the current unstable clock.

The important thing is make sure the max temp remain at reasonable level.

Well that's excellent and as I said I am enjoying seeing how far we can push the 460.

I will do the latest suggestions tomorrow and post the results here.

All I have to do now is work out whether to get a 960 or a 970.

Thank you for your help I do appreciate it I wouldn't have tried that
on my own.

Just an update

I tried the 460 @ 900 and it ran for about 10 seconds then crashed so I think 850 is the best it will do which is not bad.

I have decided to get the MSI GTX960 I am not a hardened gamer so I think
a 970 would be overkill for me.

Sure, the 960 would be quite a large jump from your 460.

But regarding your GTX460 being unstable at 900MHz, is it already with voltage at 1.05v, or were you still on stock voltage?

Was still on stock voltage I wanted to see how far I could push it before
it crashed obviously not far.

May try again tomorrow before fitting the 960 will go to 1 volt and 875 then 900
If it's still ok.

I think you meant 1.087v right?

I guess it would be interesting to go all out one last time on your trusty 460 to see what the old dog can do, before giving it a retirement with the glory that it deserves :p

Well I have now pushed the settings up a bit.

Voltage now at 1000 900MHz 68degrees - 99 - 49 - FPS 43

Seems ok at these settings so I am going to quit while I am ahead.
