So, I'm looking to upgrade my faithful old GTX1060, yeah - I know...I have a limited budget of £500 but I need to upgrade the CPU as well.
I'm on an MSI B450 MB (gaming pro carbon AC) which I don't need to replace as yet and I have a seasonic Focus+ Gold 650w PS.
I want to get a Ryzen 5600X (MB bios has been updated) so that leaves me with around £350ish to play with.
I do have a 144hz 1440p g-sync compatible monitor and would prefer to play stuff at 1440p.
I'm not looking to play AAA games very much and certainly not at insane fps but I would like to play Starfield when its out, with reasonably high visuals at a fluid frame rate at 1440p.
Currently i'm looking at an RTX3060TI as this would be within budget. I'm not sure that my setup as a whole would suit an RTX 4060 - TI or vanilla what with the reduced memory bandwidth on the card and the B450 being pcie 3.0 but I'm ready to be persuaded if I have got that wrong.
The alternative is an AMD card but I really don't know much about them and I'm rather curious about ray tracing and DLSS.
What would you guys reccomend?

3060 Ti doesn't really have the grunt or the VRAM to use RTX in the newest games @ 1440p, so I'd get a 6700 XT, which has 12GB and can use FSR.

If it has to be nvidia, then I'd wait a week or two and see what the 4060 Ti 16GB comes in at. You can get a 5600 non-X for £120 which would leave nearly £400, though I suspect you'll be short about £100.

Think asus are still giving cashback
On 6700xt
I got £25 for leaving a review
Found there was another cashback offer which
Wasn't mentioned on ocuk
Got another £40 from that one
Both been approved just waiting for asus to pay out
Also got 2 free games which I sold
Ended up it's costing me about £240 for a 6700xt
I think that 2 free games part has expired
But think they're shortly going to add a new free game
Starfield and possibly a second game

Looks like asus have also started cashback
On nvidia cards too
Though I agree with the guys a 6700xt

Yeah looks like 30/062023 was cut off date
But ocuk are still advertising it so
Might be worth a Web ticket to ocuk
If interested in an Asus card
When I got the 2 free games it also said expired
But a quick Web note to ocuk
And they confirmed it had been extended
They just hadn't updated their website
So it might possibly have been extended too
Though if not in a hurry I would wait
And see if they drop a new promotion including starfield etc

And thanks I only saw they had a nvidia promotion
Didn't actually read the promo

First of all, loads of thanks to everyone who replied. I've been busy looking into AMD cards.
However, I can't say I'm sold on AMD. I get what everyone is saying but I'm not sure that is entirely pertinent to my situation.
I'm not looking to play AAA games at ultra high settings and insane fps. I'm also not convinced by the prevailing view that 8gb vram isn't enough - its not a deal breaker if I can't play at the highest texture settings.
I am concerned about issues with AMD drivers - their stability and the lack of frequency of updates.
And least of all - aesthetics. My PC has a white interior and I would quite like to replace my white 1060 with another white graphics card - and there aren't any AMD ones!
You guys are entirely correct about the best bang for the buck is with an RT 6700 XT, but in my mind at least, that's not all there is to consider.
I guess theres a good deal of brand loyalty involved too.
Since I swapped out my 2D cirrus logic (2mb) graphics card that was paired with an Orchid righteous 3d card for the original Nvidia Geforce card, I've only ever used Nvidia.
I've waited until the 4060's were released to make some judgement but all its done is muddy the waters , so to speak.
As I said earlier, its not the 8gb vram that is the problem, but the 128mbit bus on pcie 3.0 that concerns me.
So, if my choice is between a 3060ti and a 4060/4060 ti - what would you choose?

the 128 bit bus on pcie 3.0 that concerns me.

der8auer tested this and overall (if you take all games tested) the performance gap between the cards closes on PCI-E 3.0, but, the power consumption remains significantly lower for the newer one:

Would I pay £50 more? Yes. Would I pay £100 more? Probably not. Techtesters has some yearly power cost numbers in their review, if you want to compare:

Regardless of whether you believe us about the VRAM being a problem, VRAM is also relevant to PCI-E 3.0 vs 4.0 and the bus width, because the fewer lanes and narrower bus, the greater demand on what VRAM is present.

Since you mentioned using ray tracing, I would watch this:

Spray paint
Or stick on vinyl
Can make any card a white one :)

I am not a die hard fan of either amd or nvidia
Or even intel if they step up their game
I will buy from whoever provides the products I need
That meet the requirements I want at the price point I want
Had some great cards from amd like the early radeons
Could flash them to a higher level card
Then the 7970 was probably best card of that era
I think if you will stick to 1 brand just because of loyalty
You may be doing yourself a disfavour

As for 8gb vram
How long would you intend keeping a gpu?
Even if 8gb vram weren't a current problem
How soon would it become a problem
