Hi all my girlfriend has finally decided she wants to play games again and her pc is in need of a few upgrades. She currently has an AMD 580 paired with an AMD 5600x. She is using a 1440p 165 hz g sync monitor.

Her case is pretty bad so I’m looking at getting her a mid tower case. I have a Phanteks p600s which I love but is there anything cheaper/better to look at?

Lastly she has a Superflower 650w power supply which is now 7 years old so I’d probably upgrade to a 750 or 850w one for a bit of future proofing.

I know that nearly anything I replace the 580 with will be a big upgrade, what can I get for £300-£400 which is best? I don’t mind looking at amd or nvidia.

Thanks all :)

Does the monitor support freesync? At least, I assume it doesn't matter if you have a 580 currently.

From AMD: RX 6750 XT, RX 6800 non-XT or 7700 XT are all good for 1440p. It is hard to recommend any nvidia card for that budget, the first would be the 4070 non-Super, but they're still above £400.

I wouldn't bother replacing the Superflower yet, most of these PSUs have 10 year warranties and it'll still use the old 8pins which are fine for AMD cards.

They're nice, but there are cheaper options. E.g. Phanteks P400S or XT Ultra and Lian Li 216.

The monitor is an Acer Predator xb271hu which only supports g sync I think. I don’t think she’s the type of person to notice if g sync or free sync is even on though tbh. It’s my old monitor I’ve handed down to her :)

Ok I’ll look at those amd options and case options. The 7700xt might be perfect looking at a comparison websites. I’ll not bother with a power supply then. 650w will still cut it for a 7700xt and 5600x then?

Thanks for your reply.

Should be fine, if not then I'd look at something like these:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £324.92 (includes delivery: £0.00)

The RMx and Focus are both older designs with the 8-pin PCIE cables, the SHIFT is the newer with a 16 pin for nvidia cards. Note that the SHIFT requires a compatible case because of the side mounted cables.

The 7700xt might be perfect looking at a comparison websites.
It performs similar to the 6800 non-XT in raster and price is similar too, but it does have newer features, at the cost of 4GB of VRAM.

I wouldn't pay more than £400 though, because the 7800 XT is available for just over £450. The 6800 non-XT is £370.

I’m going to order the Phanteks xt ultra case and the corsair rmx 750w power supply you suggested to power a 7800xt

The graphics card says it recommends a 750w psu but I should be ok right?

Thanks :)

I’m an idiot. I think I selected free shipping instead of free next day delivery. So the case won’t come tomorrow I bet. :(

My order just says order confirmed

I forgot to mention one thing. With the case for the rbg there is a 3 pin cable to plug into the motherboard. But on the motherboard the rbg bit is 4 pin.

The cable won’t plug into the motherboard so am I needing to get an adaptor of some sort?

Can you list the case and motherboard model, so I can take a look at it?

The RGB and ARGB headers are very different in both their voltage and how they function.

The case is the Phanteks xt pro ultra. The motherboard is an Asus b350f strix motherboard. I think I did see a cheap adaptor that might be what I need to get it working but I’m not sure. It’s from a competitor so I can’t link it though.

It’s this which I’m thinking would work

Asus b350f strix motherboard is 12v RGB only
Phanteks xt pro ultra is 5v ARGB

The cable you linked to does not work for your requirements.

You can get a converter which allows 12v or 5v to connect to each other (deepcool & nzxt do one I believe some of the cheaper chinese brands do as well they cost £15+)

That case you have already has its own ARGB controller built in so all the fans can use argb (supports 7 devices) it just cant be controlled via mboard.

Oh thanks for that link. Are you also saying that the cable I’m trying to plug into the motherboard could plug into the case argb controller? That’s amazing if so

Your case is 5v only ARGB

Motherboard is 12v only RGB.

Both do not work together.

You control the case ARGB via LED button. (4 fans included with case and if you have ARGB 5v say CPU cooler all can be connected to case controller)

ARGB is better you can have different colours for each led you cant do this for RGB they all have to be same colour.

Do not plug into motherboard it will fry 5v parts including the case controller.

The deepcool device I linked to can convert so you are able to connect different volt devices. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNJPCrChOr0 if you want to be connected to mboard only (no case controller or button) method #2 in video.

It's really not worth it in my opinion messing around with converting I would stick with case controller only. (If it's a big deal I would rather pickup a second hand motherboard with ARGB and sell old board it wouldn't be price wise much difference to how much the converter would cost)
