Am I crazy to consider dropping circa £1k on a new 3080ti?!

Current specs;
CPU: 5800X3D
GPU: 1080ti
RAM: 32gb DDR4
PSU: 850W Asus Rog Strix
Monitor: Acer X34P 1440p 120hz ultrawide

Feel tied to Nvidia due to monitor being G-Sync. Not fond of the pricing of the 4090, but also feel like circa £1k for old technology is kinda steep! Is it worth holding out for the 4080? Seen mixed details on them and think a 3080ti while EOL may be the best upgrade in reference to value for money.

To add, I am building my lad a PC for Christmas, so it is the perfect excuse to upgrade my GPU and chuck the 1080ti in his!

Appreciate any insight!

It might be worth waiting to see how fast the new 4080 vs the 3080ti is and what the final pricing of it will be. Also if it will push the price of the old gpu's down anything.

You can get a 3090 Ti for £1150 and a 3080 for £750, so if you do buy, be careful what you pay, deals are popping up all the time and it's nearly black friday. Everyone knows these cards are overpriced, but it is the going rate and midrange cards aren't coming any time soon.

Agree on your comments, I did consider the 3090ti too but didn't think there was a great deal in it for gaming (circa 5%ish?). I am not convinced black friday will see any genuine discounts on commodities such as graphics cards especially stuff that is EOL and still selling at the prices they are up for currently.

4080 would be a consideration but assume they will be hard to get hold of, and I need to land one before xmas - also not sure on how they are looking vs 3080/90ti

I have a 3080 10GB and a very similar screen, an Alienware AW3418DW. I think it’s the same panel. A 3080 is a great card for this res and easily pushes 120Hz in most games. Some exceptions exist of course, CP2077 even with DLSS doesn’t get that high but most games will be 100FPS+.

The thinking is that the 4080 will be slightly faster thant he 3090ti for less power use.

Yes it will be hard getting one on release as is with all new cards unfortunatly.

yes, pick up a used one for half that or shop around for deals on new at £800 or less.

4080 seems pretty rubbish compared to the 4090 and isnt much faster than ampere cards without DLSS, it's really a 4070 in disguise. If you want new gen then the only sensible option is a 4090FE.
