GPU vs i7 for basic number crunching?

Not being a gamer i never really invest a lot in a graphics card. I was wondering if someone could explain how a good graphics card compares with an i7 CPU when it comes to performing basic arithmetic? What is better? Is a GPU only better when the code is parallelised, or can a GPU perform sequential additions faster than a CPU?
