this may been a noob question, but as per the title I connected a second monitor to my GPU to view various things while playing games. when I connect this second screen via Hdmi, the card will no longer idle.
The GPU is a evga 1080ti, screen one is a LG 1920x1080 144hz (dp), screen two is a LG 2560x1080 60hz (hdmi).

as soon as I disconnect the second screen the card idles, also if I have the second screen connected to the onboard this allows the GPU to idle but I'm unable to control it in the Nvidia panel.

Any ideas why it won't idle connected to the gpu? any help greatly appreciated.

Graphics cards produce more heat when you run two monitors. They produce even more when you run two at different resolutions, and even more when you run them at different refresh rates. Having said that, I am very surprised that it makes a noticeable difference to a 1080ti ~ a card well suited dealing with lots of heat.
First experiment I would do is run both monitors at 60hz and the same resolution and see what happens.
It used to be a problem many years ago, but honestly I thought it was pretty much solved now. Many years ago I had this issue and the only solution was to get a second monitor the same as the first.

Thanks I shall give that a go and see if it idles, if it does guess I’ll be shopping for another 144hz screen lol.
