Grado RS-1 / HF-1

do you know much about the grado rs1's when compared with the alessandro ms-pro ?

The ms-pro is a modified rs-1 right? do you think it is better value for money?

The ms-pro represents better value for money in the way that regardless where you order it from there is a fixed price and only subject to import customs duties.

You are not limited by the retailers price fixing of the Rs-1 say.

Example Rs-1 in the uk is about 700 squids. Ms-pro can be picked up for about 400 or less. But you have to order from the alessandro website.

The share much in common with the Rs-1 albeit some slight sonic differences. The Ms-pro is a more drier sound than the Rs-1's. Bass is a little tighter but has slightly less depth than the Rs-1's.

The highs don;t go as high as the Rs-1's which may suit your taste's. But the main difference is in the midrange tonality. The Rs-1's have a sweet midrange where as the ms-pro's do not. As I stated above it is more a drier sound.

It still shares the Rs-1 long decay rate (when compared to other phones). Which give stringed instruments an arguably more believable presentation.

Sonically wise mspro V Rs-1 is preference. For me I prefer the Rs-1.

if you look on the bay, and search grado, if you look at the bottom, in the shops section of the result. There is a seller called audio affair, who is selling lots of grado stuff cheap (similar to what i expect the US price to be), and is selling the rs-1 at £495, and has good feedback rating. What do you think about that? is that a good price for them, how does it compare to the actual USA retail price?

When you talk about the midrange being sweeter on the rs-1, and drier on the ms-pro, could you go into more depth explaining what you mean. I know what i like when i hear it, but in terms of the terminology used to describe the differences, i am pretty new to this. I like a lot of detail, yet i also really like a full bodied sound. What would you recommend for me?

Any thoughts on the naim headline amp, from your experience?

Devil>Where do you live? If you are not too far away then when I get all my headphones stuff back maybe you could audition them for yourself.

Which is ironic as I just sold the last of my headphone amps off for dynamic headphones and all I have left is an electrostatic headphone amp which is useless for headphones like the Rs-1's.

Okay in reference to the Rs-1/Ms-pro sound. Take a recording your familar with that you know inside and out.

Now Ms-pros and Rs-1's share the same amount of detail. But the difference is. How do you like your music to be presented?

Now for a majority of people they like the recording to sound as accurately as possible to the original, even if the recording is terrible. There are some who like it to be coloured. I.e An added sonic flavour if you like. This can be in bright sounding, warm, dark tonality.

Now I prefer the Warm variety.

The Ms-pro sound closer to the recording than the Rs-1's. The Rs-1's add a lot of it own sound to the recording. But what you have to remember that the Ms-pro's and Rs-1s in terms in overall closely reproducing the recording accurately is far from the other headphones.

I have never liked the neutral, accurate sound as for me I find it downright boring.

It doesn;t matter if you are a newcomer what is important you like what you hear.

I will take a look at that site you mentioned tommorrow. 495 pounds sound like an awful lot of money to pay for the Rs-1's. When In the Us they cost the equivalen of 320 pounds brand new. Let me check and I will get back to you within the next 48 hours.

i live in brighton at the moment.

I currently use grado sr-125's for music listening, and really like the kind of sond they have. I love the detail they provide and i enjoy the impetus of it. I expect that i would get this to a higher level, with increased and tighter bass with the higher end models like the rs-1 / ms-pro.

My sennheiser HD600's i do find to be the opposite kind of headphone to the grados. to be honest i don't think i have ever experienced them the way they should be, as i have never had a headphone amp to drive them properly. I have always used my headphones through my PC (i have an x-fi fatal1ty soundcard as i game seriously at quake4....or did before it died, we were the best q4ctf team in europe hah!) I use my HD600s for gaming and movies on my pc, because of the larger soundstage and comfort, which is definitely more suitable for positioning in FPS games.

Obviously, my purchasing of headphones is purely based around music though, as i love my music.

When i demoed the sr125's at the shop before i bought them, i thought they were excellent immediately, i got so much enjoyment hearing the way they were with detail in general, and especially on guitars on prog rock tracks, and funk tracks. That was listening just plugged into an actual linn cd player, which had a headphone out on the player, not even via a headphone amp. My pc soundcard has never done my headphones justice, as i could tell they didn't as good on my pc as when in the shop, so i know i am missing out. So when i finally get a headphone amp, and the hi fi set up i will be buying, i know i am in for a treat.

goredwings19, any news on how i can get brand new rs-1's for the US price?

Hi devil>Sorry for the delay in replying as I have been ill. Also it has been brought to me attention that by helping you I might be breaking the rules of OcUK.

So instead you can find me on messenger or xfire.

My xfire name is goredwings19 and my messenger one is [email protected]. Find me on them and then I can go into detail without breaking any rules.

i love my HF-1's to bits. Blow my modded SR-60's right out of the water, even though they are only being driven by my arcam delta 290 integrated.

If your looking for an amp then try the little dot 2+ (www.little-tube.com). Some good reviews at head-fi regarding iots pairing with the HF-1's.

I see some people have mentioned the modding of the HF-1s into the HHF-1's The little picciue below shows the type of work that larry does to these stuinning headphones. These particular ones in zebrawood.

Im getting a zebrawood deep conversion of mine done next summer. The upgrades vary between £150 for just the houseing and recable, and £250 for an upgraded recable, woodie end tips, deeper houseing, etc. Fully modded HHF-1's ahve been compared favourably to the standard RS-1's with a less harsh sound signature, more bass, plus their stunning aesthetics.

Enjoy :D
