Work/life experience is just as important than paper qualifications. As a manager for a (very) large uk company I wouldn't take on a graduate in a top paid job with lots of responsibilities without first knowing the person could do the job. Theoretical knowledge and on the job competence/experience are two totally different things. I do however sympathise with those caught in a catch 22 situation. I have gone the opposite way around to most here. I'm currently studying for a degree (B.Sc) at 37yrs old as this is needed for further promotion! I'm doing this while in full time work and trying to raise a family so it's not all rosy on the other side of the fence (although my employer is paying the tuition fees!).
As has already been stated, work placement at a lower level in your chosen field while studying is perhaps the best way forward as then you can go into an interview with a little more confidence.
