Hi,

It's regarding that show, Grand Designs with Kevin McCloud. The people who build their properties in the middle of nowhere...where do they get their water, electricity and gas supply from because I don't see a utility company making provision for a single property...

:o

Oh and you see the foundations being laid down but you never see the water supply pipe and drainage being installed...

Cheers

They do and it costs loads.

Some look like they are in the middle of nowhere, but last week there was a guy who had loads of planning trouble, when a neighbour complained of overlooking. The entire show gave the impression that he built it miles from anyone else.

I think that sometimes it is cleverly shot to protect the privacy of any neighbours, giving the impression that it is remote.

That one was so annoying - really illustrated the futility of the whole process.

I love Grand Designs, but it's not what it used to be.

I believe that the utility companies have to be able to supply stuff to all the new homes being built so it's entirely up to them to get the stuff to you no matter how much it costs them.

I'm reasonably sure

The dont show that in the program which is strange they just beelt on about design, which is sad, one guy built a house in the Yorkshire and was relying on power from a generator for his house, the guy from London that built a watermill house, I was thinking wow its in the middle of nowhere but it was right near a A road and next to neighbours, I laughed at him not getting it down in writing he obvious never went to business school.

Plus I hate it when people never say what they spent, to me it thinks they are just in it for the resale value.

The Newport folly was looking good until they added that bathroom on top of the new build.

I thought that bathroom was a crime against design, looked awful.

I have watched some of the early episodes recently (More 4) and the whole program was completely design orientated, and then later episodes focused heavily on building. I think it swings from one foci to the other depending on the build.

From the sound of a few of them they focus on the design because the building happens so randomly they are not able to get the cameras down there to cover it.

It doesn't cost the utility company anything, as they charge it to the customer.

Ah thanks guys. What the utility company charges the customer must be a fortune. The mill conversion in Somerset was impressive.

kevin mcloud is a ****. i love the program but cant stand his shittyness. all he ever does is slags people off behind theyre backs during the build then licks theyre a holes before the end

total ****** , hope he chokes to death on a wonky brick

It is and they can afford it, you never build a house beyond the means of sewers and water gas and electricity and telecommunications unless you can afford it.

Haha, little harsh?! :p He doubts the builds but wouldn't say he slags them off.

You are also totally wrong. The utility companeis do not have to supply homes especially not those built in remote places - if you wish to have a service installed you pay for it, and it can cost 10's of thousands.

Most remote properties have localised sererage treatment services, sesspits, readbeds or similar for the waste water. The fresh is often from a spring or ground source such a a borehole. Gas is non existant in many, they either install eheir own LPG or use oil fired central heating and cooking. Electricity is the only utility youll find in many homes, and as i said it can be VERY expensive to install.

(P.S - i worked for the UK's no 1 Water company in the design department for several years!)

I've not really liked this series, hasn't been anything groundbreaking imo.

That watermill was essentially a flatpack house, nothing exciting there.
