Grand National - barbaric?

I haven't got anything against racing, obviously horses probably enjoy the thrill of running fast. The problem with the grand national is that is almost designed to be torture for horses...

OT: My sig is just a "print screen" from the nvidia tech demo "Dawn Ultra" running on my freebie GF FX. :)

The fences have been lowered as well as being made less 'harsh' over the last few years.
Then again it is supposed to be very hard -that is why it is so famous/infamous and why all the trainers want to win it.Lower the fences much more and it just becomes a.n.other 3 1/2+ mile handicap.
The 'going' and competance of the jockeys/trainers has as much or even more relevance to the no. of fatalaties in the race than the height of the jumps. There's prob at least 15 horses in the race that have absolutely no chance of winning or even completing the course, any fatalaties will probably be to these horses or from accidents directly caused by these horses
