Which one should I go for - Grandstream 802 or the 812. Pricewise, they are similar.

812 states - "Includes a built-in NAT router which can handle routing speeds up to 100MBps" Not sure what this means.

It means that the 812 isn't just an ATA, it's also a router. You've most likely already got a router so don't bother with the 812.

Go for the 802, or the 801 if you only need a single POTS port. I've had an 801 for a couple of years, it does the job very nicely. They're not the most user friendly things in the world but once they're setup you're good to go.

Having said that they're a set and forget thing, I'm reminded that firmware updates can be a bit tricky as not all of them can simply by done through the web management interface:

It's easy enough to setup a local HTTP server (I'll do it through Python on a Linux box), but it's a pain that it's necessary.

I think 801 is the best option for me from what you have said.

How much configuring does it need for a first time set up? Is it plug and play?

If required, I would go with a VoIP provider who is willing to help with it.

It's some time ago I set mine up so I can't remember how involved the setup was. I do remember that it was more than just entering the SIP server and credentials.

If you end up going with Sipgate I can share my settings.
