Grapes - Do you wash them before eating?

Take into account all the foul hands that may have touched them starting in the vineyard onwards, the bloke or woman who stopped for a gypsies kiss or a tom tit amongst the vines & used a leaf as paper & then carried on picking the grapes.
That's common practice working in the field where there are no other means to be hygienic.

good shout. i never thought of it that way. even more reason to wash my fruit and veg, hell, i may even start using fairy :p

Yes, I wash all fruit and vegetables unless you peel it or remove a skin before you eat it - this is what the packaging will recommend anyway. As well as residue pesticides, anyone might have picked it up, touched it, licked it or thrown it on the floor before you bought it.

Having said that I wouldn't be terrified of ocassionally eating some grapes or strawberries or something without washing them if it wasn't convenient.

Talk about cotton wall generation.

You guys must have the worse immune system if you can't even eat a piece of fruit without having to wash it!

I eat pretty much everything without washing it, what's the point of having an immune system if it's got nothing to do!

no, rarely wash any fruit / veg unless caked in mud (probably should though)

but for strawberries not worth the hassle

Yep wash grapes now ever since finding a spider in my grapes :o

Whole branch bit was covered in cobwebs which I ignored since it wasn't touching the grapes, then the spider came out. Not afraid of spiders but thought to better start washing fruit first :p

Grapes don't actually make it home from the shop they are always eaten in the car by my daughter! so no never washed!

LOL! your immune system will do nothing against fertilizers and pesticides.

You don't necessarily have to wash fruit and veg but why would you not for the sake of a few seconds and a marginal amount of extra cleanliness? Do you wash your hands after going to the toilet for instance? If you do then you're part of the cotton wool generation - if you don't then I definitely don't want to shake hands with you and more to the point I want to be sure you are never ever near any food items that I may consume. It's about drawing a line somewhere and a great many people believe (and with good reason) that washing fruit and veg is not detrimental to your health - in fact quite the converse.

While I agree that some dirt is necessary for a healthy immune system there are certain limits here and basic hygiene precautions go a long way to ensuring your health.
