Graphics Card Advice Needed

Hi all,

I'm rather undecided on which graphics card to purchase. I originally saved up for a 5090, but after seeing the prices, I've been put off and simply cannot personally justify spending that kind of money on a graphics card.

My current setup is:
  • i9 14900K
  • 64GB RAM
  • 2080 Super
  • 1000W power supply
  • Samsung G9 OLED monitor

My 2080 Super is struggling, so I need to upgrade. I'm viewing this year as a bit of a stop-gap to see what comes next year.

I'm torn between picking up a 5080 and seeing how it goes, or saving a bit of money and getting a 7900 XTX for £700, or possibly the RX 9700 XT. At the moment, I'm leaning towards the 7900 XTX just for the extra VRAM, but if someone thinks I'm being foolish picking up an almost 2-year-old card, I'd like to know!

Games I play are MSFS, Arma Reforger, and Farming Simulator.

I have to agree with @henry hoov3r; if you want a card right now the 9070 is really the main game in town. It's available, has a decent amount of VRAM and is priced well.

As the TPU graph shows, at your 4k-ish resolution it should double the performance of your 2080 Super (given that's about 15% slower than the 2080 Ti):

Rumour is that the RTX 5000 series is going to experience a major supply increase over the next few months, and prices might stabilise. But the 9070 XT is here and it's a pretty solid choice.

Sensible money is on the 9070XT
Nvidia funny money is on the 5080

Up to you and depends on your use case. I went Nvidia but will be also be picking up the XT if I can get it close to the MSRP which no doubt will sell out in seconds

I'd say the 9070 / 9070xt as well, hopefully they are better stocked than the 50 series

Spend that money on a good 4k display instead.

Enjoy the high res display for productivity and day to day tasks.

When gaming, just set the display to 1080 and carry on using the 2080.

You might as well, because all modern games require some kind of upscaling anyway.
