i have a x1950 pro agp card... and while installing some ram, i knocked off a component.. now this wasnt a chip, my best guess is it was a capacitor.. but im afriad i cant find the piece that went flying.. thankfully it was cleanly knocked off, so except for that the graphics card is fine, (though obviously at the mo the card doesnt work)... does any one have a chip board reference, or similar ideas?... aka say it were a capacitor i could buy one of the same spec and solder it on

I did the same with a 9700PRO, chipped a component off the bottom. Still have it if anyone has one, and knows how to determine what it is.

yep thats the one.. urghh i dont have a digi camera at the mo... and for some reason i can't find the card (my dad has put it somewhere) erm.. could you put up a pic of the other side of the card and i will circle the missing component.. thanks

the component is called c2057 ... it is on the end furthest away from the dvi connectors, in a row of six identical looking components, on the oposite side to the cooler(i.e. the back of the board)...

With the component lable starting c, that usually indicates capacitor.

And looking at the picture above, it looks indeed to be an SMC (surface mount cap).

EDIT:

If you look at this, c2057 (part of the line of capacitors down the board) doesn't exist in the reference design, so if the card doesn't work, i'd suggest its for a different reason!

well i can finally put the card to rest, after a painful month, i've looked back at this thread and re-read it and realised, yes as you said that the capacitor doesnt even exist, i must have been blind with rage when i was reading your responses for the first time, so anyways thanks for the picks and advice, i can put the "card to rest" and have a look at some new blood, as the card is offically screwed with no visible cause, well thats good enough for me!! who wants a 8800gt? cus i shure do !!

lol :P , by the way thankyou very much "asuscooluk" and "paradigm" i have no idea why i didnt thankyou before and properly look at your responses, i can now join the battle of what i've been dreading, what the hell do i get now?!! :P

yep very possibly, but i've got some thinking to do... at the moment i've got a asrock coredualthingy, basically a bland hybrid that only plays around with 2gb of ram and pants mhz at that, so i think first i'l be looking at an asus p5k and an e1280

Definately stick it on the auction site, you never know! I try my luck at buying knackered hardware all the time, it pays off quite often too!

I present you with the £10 Inno3D 8600GTS:

Coil had come off, but not noticably (was a dry solder joint). A quick dab with a soldering iron and a bit of cat5 cable and away it goes!

eyey!! :) so the question is now bearing in mind i already have 4gb of ram and a hard drive with windows xp and cd drives, what do i do?... my motherboard at the moment will accept c2d's but wont raise voltages and will only use 2gb of ddr2 ram at low freq, so do i get a kikass graphics card now, though my processor will bottleneck it(3.4ghz prescott), do i get a c2d and 3850, with the possible expectation of crossfire, or do i get a c2d and an asus p5k and wait till my bday in july and get a card..... your ideas please....

i'l stick it on ebay after a good look under the magnifying glass, problem is many components are generically missing, so its hard to distinguished whats been possibly knocked off..

Why do they include lots of missing bits on the designs? I seen something about the X1800XT and it had some missing, did the X1800's use the same PCB as the X1900's?
