Graphics card dead?

Hi,

I switched my PC on this morning and left it for around 5-10 minutes. When I returned to it I noticed that it was stuck on the screensaver and was glitching (I couldn't get back to my desktop by moving the mouse around). I rebooted and noticed a weird red pixel patten on the boot screen. When I got back into Windows (Win 7 x64) the resolution had dropped down to 800x600 and I wan't able to change this. I re-installed the drivers and this sorted things out (even the red pixel patten on the boot screen was gone). Again I left the PC for a while and it happened again.

I'm guessing this is a graphics card issue  I currently have a GeForce 8800 GT and an Abit IP35 Pro motherboard. If this is a graphics card rpblem would my motherboard support a 9800? I'm planning on buying a new PC at some stage so I don't really want to spend too much money on a new card.

Any help would be great.

I decided to trouble shoot this last night and removed 4gb of ram as I've been having loads of blue screens (one of the reasons for needning to get a new PC). Anyway, this would appear to have solved the issue... for now.

Okay... that worked for for a couple of days, but now it happened again after removing the Ram. It's strange as removing the Ram helped for a couple of days, but now not

How much are you looking to spend on a graphics card? Don't go for the 9800 if you can get an ATi HD 5770 when its on offer again as I can see overclockers bumped the price up from £77 to £99 >.< or even the HD 6770 which is around £83.99 at the moment on overclockers.

Thanks. Probably in the area of £100 as it'll only be temporary, until I get a new PC.

I'm generally avoiding ATI though, as some of the software that I use, like Mari doesn't support ATI cards (even though the 9800 isn't officially supported by the software it still works).

Well that is rather odd, in any case the now rebranded AMD HD series offer better value for money along with performance, I got an AMD HD 6870 1gb overclocked for £109 so im happy.

Good stuff. I'm possibly going to look at the refurbished cards here over the weekend. It'll only be a temp solution anyway.
