My wife's Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X card has died and she is desperate for a new one that has the performance of a R9 290 or better that can do 1080p on Ultra settings, not really bothered if it's AMD or Nvidia but just bang for buck within the budget however I know it's not a great time to buy it now due to new cards coming out but to stop her moaning, paying a bit more will do.

Wait for the 1070, that should be around £400, or Polaris which will be even less. Crazy to buy a new card now unless you go 2nd hand, but even those prices are almost certain to drop soon.

If she cannot wait, best bet now would be a Radeon R9 390. But if she can wait 2-3 weeks then I would look at either a GeForce 1070 or one of AMD's new Polaris GPU's.

I am waiting. You will likely get more bang for your buck with the new Polaris line. My guess is for £200 or thereabouts you will be able to get a new Polaris GPU that runs cooler, quieter, more power efficient, with more vram that is as fast if not faster than the R9 290 ;)

AMD's R9 480 is rumored to offer close to 980 Ti performance at a much lower price point and power consumption. The GTX 1070 is rumored to offer GTX 980 Ti beating performance for around £400.

Either of those would be a good upgrade.

The 1070 looks like it has a reference cooler, do you know when third party coolers such as MSI will be released?

Also, I might just pick up a second hand R9 390 but is the performance on par/better than the R9 290?

2nd hand would be best imo for 1080p. If you only want 1080p @60fps then another R9 290 will last you a good few years if it doesn't die. Mine can do 1440p and above 60 fps in most games with settings turned high.

When will the 1070 or Polaris be released?

With the 1070 we have a certain launch date of 10th June, but that will be the Founders Edition aka Milk'm Edition and will probably be £400. The normal priced one's will be probably available mid to late June at £300-350.

As for Polaris, we don't have a set date just yet, but it is likely to be around the same time as 1070. We should know for sure in the next week or so.

The R9 390 would do the job you need though and is available now for £259,99.

if you cannot wait 3 weeks, then i would suggest you this XFX R9 Fury for £379 promotion, it's better than 390X & 980
and you get a free game Total War : warhammer
