Graphics Card List

I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to list me a few graphics cards that I could put into my new system.

I'm drawing up a few possibilities for everything and I'm going to pick and choose from those lists at the end - to both fit inside my budget and also give me the best possible spec for my money.

I've did most of the things and am now at the graphics card part - unfortunately I have little clue about graphics cards and until recently I was pretty much set on the 7900GT - until I was advised to go read the reviews of them in this forum. :o

I have no preference in brands, I think my maximum would be around £200 - and for that money I think we're taking from the 256mb range?

Cheers. :)

I dont think you can really go past the Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 Price: £136.95 (£160.92 Inc. VAT)

Slightly faster than the 7900GT & reliable, which many of the 7900 series are not (do a quick forum search for Nvidia Sudden Death Syndrome).

Have a look here also..

So the cheapest X1800XT you can find really :)

Edit to add: do not judge how good a card is by how much ram it has.
You can buy cards with 512MB of ram for under £100, but these cards are too slow to properly utilize the extra ram (only the fastest cards currently show a benefit from 512MB) and they WILL be slower than the more expensive 256MB cards like the X1800XT.

If you didnt had the budget i would have said the x1900XT 512MB - i was in the same position also, whether to get a 7900GT, but i heard about the failure/RMA rates or spend the extra and get a x1900XT... both cards are quite noisy though... unless you get an aftermarket cooler...

EVGA GeForce 7900 GT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - £199.69
Gainward BLISS Geforce 7900 GT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - £193.82
BFG GeForce 7900 GT OC 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - £184.42

The X1800 may also fall into your budget...

Thanks.

That seems to be the natural solution/alternative to the 7900GT.

If your not planning on volt modding the 7900GT

I wouldn't know where to start. :D

I'm in two minds whether or not to overclock the Conroe I'm going to get - I've never overclocked before - so I'm not exactly Mr Confidence - At the same time, I'd like the computer to pack a real punch, especially having read: "It would be a shame not to overclock the Conroe" way too many times on these forums.

-edit-

Thanks for a few alternatives :)

I also hear SLI far beats it's CrossFire alternative - not sure if I'll venture down that route but something else to consider as well I suppose.

Overclocking the cpu is easy enough ;) Have fun with your new kit and remember and post your 3d mark 05 and 06 score when you get it up and running :D

I'm more worried about applying the thermal paste. :D

It could easily be something of a D.I.Y disaster.

If your budget for your card is £200, then id agree with the above about the 256mb x1800 XT, faster than the 7900 GT, and cheaper as said, its a stonking card. :)

If I was to extend the budget considerably - would the:

Connect3D ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB GDDR3

be much of an improvement?

if you could, then definately yes....the x1900xt would be a better card, and you probably wouldn't even need to overclock it anyway...

I'm not sure it'd be worth the extra over the £160 X1800XT, thats a very fast card and a great price.

Have to agree, the performance increase from the x1800 to the x1900 is not worth an extra £80, x1800 will easily do you till you upgrade again to DX10. :)
