Graphics card noise levels.

Hi Everyone
Just been looking at a Cooler for the CPU and I am going to go for the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 so as to keep the noise levels down.
But I would like to know about the current graphics card levels particularly the
OcUK GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI especially if you have 2 running in SLI.

Couple more questions... is DirectX 10 mainly linked to vista?

Will I be OK to run 8800GT with DX10 on windows XP Pro?

Just watch the Freezer 7, they are by no means quiet. I had to reduce the fan speed of mine via fan control in the bios to a level that I was happy with. At stock, the fan ramps up quickly to 2500RPM and is quite loud.

Mine is running at 1500 and doesn't go over 1900 or so. Any more is too loud IMHO.

DX10 is Vista only. But don't worry - there is no single title that is worth upgrading your OS for, so stick with XP.
I've been running DX10 cards on XP for the past year and they run absolutely fine, demolishing DX9 games.

you can run the DX 10 cards, but you cant run DX10 on XP, so you will be running DX9c on, if you upgrade to vista, then you can install DX10

If you are worried about noise levels on the graphics card then you might want to consider getting some aftermarket cooling attached. I have one of these on my X1900XT cooling it completely passively. Lowered my temps by 10c when idle and but 15-20 when under load with no noise at all!

I don't know if you can use it passively on an 8800GT as I have no experience of them but I think they use less power than my card so possibly run a lil cooler??

Maybe someone else here has had experience of an 8800GT + Accelero S1?

Looks like they may be quite noisy especially if you go for SLI.

8800GT + Accelero S1 looks to be a good match according to this post.

I brought a Ocuk 8800GT a few weeks ago and i cant even hear it, mine came with a big heatsink on it tho not like the slimline looking version pictured.

I think the early models came with a smaller fan/heatsink but they soon got replaced by a new larger fan. Larger fan is usually quieter due to lower RPM so hopefully they should all be using the new fan/heatsink by now.

Depends how quiet you want it to be I guess? The ambient noise in my computer room is very low so I can always hear something going on inside the PC, so a passive cooler is a great improvement!

Thanks for the advice is cleared a lot of things up.
Just a question to Kearney 1988 have you any more Pt No's or Product No's for the
Ocuk 8800GT you received ?
I would like to get the quiet version like yours if possible.
I would be annoyed if I paid £150 for a card and then you cant stand the noise of your computer.
Cos am getting on I suppose ( grumpy old git)
