Graphics card not recognised following Ram Upgrade

A friend at work has recently upgraded his kids generic Dell Desktop with an ATI Radeon graphics card, no specific model type at the mo but i do know it had about 1GB of onboard memory.

He has also bought 2 x 2GB ram modules to upgrade the machine from 2 x 512mb. According to DELL his Mobo can take up to a max of 4gb

With 4gb ram installed the machine does not recognise the GPU but can see all 4gb of ram, with 1 x 2gb it works fine......

I know i am missing the full specs for the machine, he's going to bring them in tomorrow but i was just wondering if any body had any clues......

Cheers

The whole spec will be useful when you have it - especially, the new ATi card and the card it replaced and the MB, memory and PSU etc...

Has he tested both new sticks singularly - to see if they both work?

Advise him to rum memtest on each stick, if they both boot the machine with only one stick installed (also test them in both DIMM slots)

We'll assume he's bought the correct memory and is using the correct settings - but ask him to double check the BIOS settings/voltages. Also, he could try bumping up the NB volatage (MC[H]) a couple of increments.

It maybe he's overstressing the PSU with the addition of new card and memory or it's a simple BIOS setting problem - or other... We'll have a better picture once we have the full spec.

Additional: Has he disabled the onboard GFX in the BIOS?

OK

Mother board: 915P/G Combo by MSI
Processor: Intel (R) Pentium 4 @3.2GHz
PSU: 350W FSP Group Noise Killer Model FSP350-60THN-P
Memory: 4Gb DDR2 (hopefully) Previously 2 x 512mb

Previous GPU: ATI Radeon x800 256mb

New GPU: ATI Radeon HD2400 Pro (VX912) think it has only 512mb on board

The new GPU was a donation, The Ram has been tested in both slots and each 2GB has been tested seperately.....

Not sure if he has disabled any onboard GFX

Anyways, hopefully an answer can be found.....cheers for the help

You should have enough power but it may be a power related problem - it's worth trying a different PSU if you have one ot hand. If not here's a link to Huddy's site for a guide on testing a PSU with a voltmeter - link - scroll down to the PSU headings.

I would definitely try upping the voltage of the NB (MCH) - and even the memory voltage if you have the option (going over stock does technically void your warranty). You may also want to slacken the timings while your trying to get it stable. Also, what is the brand and spec of the new memory?

The other thing you may want to consider is flashing the BIOS to the latest release.

Additional: Is the CPU/system clocked? If it is knock everything back to defaults while testing.
