Graphics Card power from psu

Hi i have jus got a 8600gts and it needs a extra power from my psu how ever the graphics card connector on my psu is a 4pin design like you would fit to a cd rom or hard disk , but the conector on the graphics card is a 6 pin which i dont have on my psu . Is it possible to get an adaptor or will i have to get a new psu ? dose it matter if you dont add the power lead will it work by taking its power from the pci slot ?
