Graphics Card Power Question!

Hey,

I bought a AMD VEGA 56 recently and i asked the forums if my 600w power supply would be good enough, someone said yes. My card has been crashing frequently and i had no idea why and i was certain it couldnt be the psu because someone was so certain about it being enough power. I have now read that the minimum psu requirement for it is 650w. When i upgrade my psu will my graphics card forever be damaged or should it work like normal?

600w is plenty for that card. What brand is the PSU? Could just be a poor quality PSU or the problems are elsewhere.

However, you're unlikely to damage it by underpowering it.

Yeah that is what I am thinking, some people see the wattage and pick up the first unit they see (hopefully the op hasn't picked up a cheapo unit)

Well its an EVGA 600w PSU, seemed like a somewhat known brand and had some good reviews. I hope the psu is the reason the graphics card crashes and im glad underpowering it doesnt damage it. Thank you for the quick replies guys!

Ok well that is different then, they are good units. A 650w unit is plenty if it is Evga mate. If you have any overclocks turn them off and try again. When you crash is it display driver has stopped working? If the card is overclocked put it back to default and try. If you get bluescreens do you know what error codes you get? Could be the memory if its BSOD.

Well, i have not tried to overclock it and by default any overclocking done is reset everytime the card crashes. Im pretty sure its the graphics card that crashes because my monitor goes dark before i stop hearing sound and the same light on the gpu goes out the instant the monitor turns off. I have been having memory issues and blue screens since this morning after my pc updated to the newest update and now i think i have to upgrade my whole set up something which i didnt want to do now but i was planning on doing when i had a little more saved up. Just this morning i have had 3 different error codes on several blue screens (generally indicating the graphics driver and ram i think)

What's the exact model?

EvGA has some garbage lower end units, not everything they sell is good. The higher end is generally solid as they use Superflower as the OEM, that isn't true for the entire line.

Ahh I didn't know some of the lower end stuff was poor mate, I usually only buy the titanium models from Evga like the one I have now.

Depends on your budget?

The tier list I linked gives you some good indications as to what to look for, anything B tier (550w +) or above that fits your budget should be good really.

That aside, is there any chance you can test the Vega 56 in another machine? There's no guarantee that it's the PSU specifically at fault. The main reason that the PSU you're using is listed so poorly on the tier list is because it lacks certain protections and doesn't match one or two standards that it really should. While definitely poor it should still be able to supply enough juice to the card.

I suggest you give a program 'whocrashed' a try, it might give a clue as to what is happening. I bought a new graphics card, installed it and it threw a d6 Q code (no VGA) difficult to understand because it played games on high settings fine, it just wouldn't restart, turned out it wasn't fully in the PCI slot at the bracket end where any leverage is not easy.

I suggest you take it out and reseat it, it seems a ridiculous suggestion if it's working but after my experience maybe it isn't.

Ah thanks a lot i will try that, hopefully it works.

Just another thought, are you using 2 cables to power the card? Not sure what model the card is, but if it needs a 6+6 or 8+8 make sure you use 2 separate cables.
I'd definitely look at replacing that psu though.
