Graphics Card/RAM

You're right, you need a PCI-E x 16 card. That's pretty much any modern graphics card. It also looks like the motherboard has a 4gb total memory limit so 2 x 2gb modules, which unless you're a serious gamer or user will be plenty.

The issue you may face however is will your PSU and case support a new card? I'd check the wattage rating of your existing power supply, whether it has the power connectors and the available case space before worrying about which graphics card to choose.

In all honesty if it was me I'd factor in a new motherboard into any upgrade budget as that one is poor. Then you'd be able to fit more ram and the motherboard will support future upgrades a bit better.

I'd like to upgrade my CPU from Athlon II X3 to the Phenom II X4, and get a decent graphics card to replace the built-in. Is that wise for the price? Maybe £150 or so.
RAM seems out of the question, so 4GB will have to do.
I'll pick up a 500W power unit as well. I'm hoping this should sort me out for another year or two for my basic computing needs.

Ah lucky you spotted that out! Yes indeed you can only go with a CPU with a TDP of 95w or lower. That means your best option now will be the AMD Phenom II X4 925 :)

Although I do believe there is a version of the 955 which is 95w but it will be hard to find!
