Graphics Card tester program

3dMark 2005 and 2006 are the most commonly used benchmarking applications, you can use your scores in them to compare with others with similar setups and see how you're getting along.

Fraps is a little app which displays your framerate whilst you're playing a game.

Depends what you have running and also you may have vsync enabled and that limits the framerate to 60 fps ...try turning it off in your gfx card options.

I would bet that if you are sitting at 60 in yellow at the top of your screen then you have vsync turned on. Shut it off and see what that puppy can do :)

60 is real good for all but fps games, even then its good to most but some folks like their fps over 100

60 is plenty in a FPS game...you're not going to notice much difference past 60...anything below 60 sucks though

rubbish, i played unreal on a cyrex 333 and matrox mystique 220. 4fps is easily enough!

really though, I can play down to about 25fps then its gets rubbish

Right click on your desktop, go to Properties, go to Settings, go Advanced, and it will be on the tab that is specific to your graphics card. It's called VSync (as in vertical sync), and having it on synchronises/caps the frames per second to the refresh rate (normally 60Hz, or 60 cycles per second). Turn it off to let you fps go above 60.

edit: that's where it is in XP, should be something similar in Vista.

It's all personal preference...I can't play FPS games under about 40fps for singleplayer and under 60fps for multiplayer.

I did beat R6 Vegas running about 25-30fps the entire time.....but that game was just too cool :p
