my current rig is
q6600 2.4 @ 3.2
8gig corsar reaper 4x2gig sticks
asus p5q pro mobo
psu 650w

1x lg bluray burner
windows 7
im after some rough ideas on whats a good card to get i play a couple of games but not many, well until cod mw2 arrives that will get the most play time i think lol.
thanks for any help and replys guys

Id say get a GTX275 or a 4890 on that budget. Probably a 4890 as you could add another in crossfire later on that mobo if you wanted too.

Why you upgrading though? What res is your monitor? If you dont play many games is the 8800GTX not alright, it still manages to hold its own in most recent games.

Be ready for everyone sayin "wait for the next lot of cards to be released". Its meant to be happening in a few weeks and may mean price drops for the current cards.

Be aware of the new cards released soon :p @ ducky ;)

Seriously though, it may well be worth waiting - depends if you are desperate for an upgrade... if not then I say wait :)

Pointless waiting for the new cards if only £150 to spend on one, so id say the 4890 for that budget, as its around the 275's performance, but its cheaper at only £126.

Depends though, you may argue that the new cards will drop in price further still, *or* the 150 pounds price point will be the lower / mid range cards of the 5xxx which will still be faster than the 4890.

Still though, as it is just speculation the OP has to decide. :p

Bearing in mind that at $199 for a 5850, which works out at just under £140 at the current exchange rate + VAT, you'll be getting a lot more performance for your money if you wait a few weeks.

i may go with one these 2 but havent a clue which to get,
XFX ATI Radeon HD 4890 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
or
Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4890 PCS+ BattleForge Edition 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
how do the 4890's hpld up on heat? would i be best getting a cooler for the card also sorry theres so many questions but i dont want to make a mistake an buy some thing thats going to be utter poo ;)
think the main game the card will be used for are the cod's an arma 2,does any one actualy know the prices on the 5's or is it all speculation on the price.
many thanks for the help so far guys

just about test run arma2 havent run any games on the system since gow2,
will i notice any major difference between the 8800gtx an a 4890 sorry for more dumb questions but since ive had my 8800 i stopped following hardware upgrade's for at least 2 years :(

Yeah you should notice a fair difference imo. Peoples opinions will vary though, some say big, some not say not 'that' noticeable.

I agree with what has already been mentioned though, the 8800gtx is still a very capable card until you start ramping up the AA and even then on some titles it will perform well with low levels of AA. Just increase the screen resolution as much as you can.

Therefore I'd be inclined to keep it, there's still a good few folk on here who may have the i7 or 955 cpu' with loads of ram but its not uncommon to still see 8800's in peoples sig. I'd still be using mine if it hadn't have blown:(
