graphics card???

lol, so does that mean that i should be going for the 260?
would the 260 perform as good with 896 memory compared to the 4870 with 1gb?

if so i will be going for either

OcUK Value GeForce GTX 260 "Core 216 55nm" 896MB GDDR3 Dual DVI (PCI-Express) + Mirror's Edge

or this one

XFX GeForce GTX 260 "Core 216 55nm" 896MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

I think the best comparison between the the GTX 260 vs HD 4870 1GB is the features and games you play as the performance is almost identical (sometimes the GTX 260 wins, sometimes the HD 4870 wins.)

I guess the questions are
1.) Which games will you be playing?
2.) Would you rather have PhysX or DX 10.1 + hdmi connectivity with sound?
3.) Do you have a crossfire board, SLI board or just none of the two?

I will be playing varied games, like counter strike source, wow, cod4/5 sims 3 on release and crysis warhead , I don't mind not having sound through hdmi it's not a priority, the board is crossfire

I dont know why they are saying go for the 260. I had a 4870 1gb graphics card, it beats the 260 hands down. It ran Crysis Warhead on high settings no problem and played all the games you want fine.

You don't say what RAM you have in your PC. Make sure you have 4gb minimum and if possible PC8500 at least. It would give you the best results with your setup per value for money.

If you can go for this one the xXx version
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-115-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=939

as the one above is pre-overclocked and the "this week only" one is not. Also note the week offer ends Wednesday, then new offers appear.

crysis warhead runs fine with a 4870 is only crysis thats poor on performance and tbh thats with nvidia or ati allthough nvidia do just pull away slighly from ati .
It's a bad game to compare cards on imo.

Both the 260 (216) and 4870 are very simular performance wise. Seems we have fanboys from both sides in this thread.

I have a ATI HD4870, but it does run pretty hot which is annoying. As far as performance goes the GTX260 is better at some things, whilst the 4870 is better at others. Go with whatever you like. I'm normally a nvidia man, but I went ati this time and don't regret it. Everything runs nicely, infact older games seem to run better than my previous 8800GT ran them, E.g. Red Alert runs better in xp with fewer crashes.

More boards support Crossfire rather than SLI as well so if you are thinking of going for two cards in the near future, then the ATI would be your best bet. I think your board has an X48 chipset? Which would mean it'll support crossfire, not sli.
