whats this normal method you talking bout and where are the drivers. i think i shall just get it and play around with it.

rigth clicking open space of desktop and selecting properties and then settings

drivers are dependent on the graphics card in question - at the time of trying it on both tv's I had asilent nv 5600 in one rig (still in my shuttle using the LG) and in the other I had an 7800GT I seem to recall - built at different times though so could well have been using different sets of drivers

The one you need may not appear if the monitor is not connected.

This may well be true - but dont you think once the tv is attached and enabled in windows the default res of the screen / panel used will usually appear by default (unless no driver is present in which case you may initially be limited to something like 800*600)

No not always. I just sold on a Toshiba HDTV that defaulted to 720 x 576 over HDMI. And do you get drivers for a TV? Maybe, I've not needed any yet.

Here the Moninfo from a 56" DLP to give an idea. You'll notice the custom 1256x712 resolution to correct overscan using DVI/HDMI. This is one of the reasons I like Nvidia with an HTPC (apart from purevideo), the overscan compensation works well.

What tv is it danzla? If you look at the manual on the manufacturers website then it will have a pc compatibility chart which will tell you what resolutions are supported over vga.

Did you say it was a samsung? If so then it should support 1360x768 over vga at 1:1 pixel mapping cus samsung usually support this. In this case vga would look much better than hdmi.

yeh it does support 1360x768. so i shall use this.

In regards to wiring both, are their any benefits,?apart from the ease of comparing both?. I would have spend about £20 on a dvi male to hdmi male anyway.

I paid about £7 delivered for an OK DVI>HDMI. And the ability to have two screens on an extended desktop is quite useful at times, monitoring MSN for example. But mainly you may find the internal scaler is quite good, don't rule it out for a few quid on a cable.
