Graphics lock ups

I think my GTX 280 could be on the way out.

It was running hot and loud before so I reseated the HS with fresh paste and ditched the stock fan in favour of 2 x 120mm fans strapped to the card, it was ok for the last few months until today.

I had 2 lock ups in COD4, screen all funny coloured and I hard to hard reset.

I just put another 120mm fan aiming at the gfx card on full and no more crashes, even now VRM temp is 80C GPU temp is 82C. I can't have it like this as now I have lots of noise.

If this card is no good what can I get to replace it? Needs to run COD4 maxed out at 1920x1200 but be very quiet. How are ATi for bugs now?

Yeah 5850 is the card for you, it will cream all over MW2/COD4.

ATI drivers are sweet for the most part and with regular updates you can expect any problems promptly fixed.

GTX sounds shot, if you're cooling the memory chips and volt regulators properly and it's still crashing, not looking good.

Go for the cheapest 5850 you can, I would hold out for the Asus, or the cheapest sapphire model.

Sounds similair to what happened with a gtx 280 that i had, once it hit 70c it started artifacting.

Rma'd it and it was tested as being faulty.

Well its not crashing now GPU has been to 85C and VRM reaching 80C. Memory is 77 C.

I can't give it any better cooling, will have to try it without the 3rd fan again.
