My mate has brought me this issue..

When I boot my PC with this graphics card, the screen displays a lot of corruption/artifacts in the form of lines and squares. The graphics card is in very good condition and doesn't seem to get hot at all.

2 x ATI Radeon XFX HD 4870 X2 2GB Graphics card running in crossfire mode..

Can anybody shed some light on this please or is it a terminal fault that cannot be fixed..

thanks

Kai

If a card has actually developed a fault then there's not usually much you can do to fix them.

There's always the "oven trick" but you want to try everything else first.

Try one card at a time and see if you can narrow the fault down to a particular card.

When you say the cards don't get hot are you just touching the card or checking the temperature in the Catalyst Control Panel?

If the cards are cool to the touch, but the GPU temperatures are high, then they may just need a good clean out of dust and you could possibly look at removing the cooler and applying new thermal paste.

WOW... think I'd want to test each card individually first. Then if still a problem, test each card in a different PC. Even if you don't have another PC yourself, another member of the family, or a friend comes in handy. You might well be throwing two decent cards away!!!

Though it's most likely one of the cards. Could be something as simple as removing each one, cleaning the contacts and maybe using compressed air to clean out the PCIe sockets could do the trick. And yes, this very thing once sorted an "apparent" graphics card problem for me once.

Think you really need to identify if one or both (unlikely) of the cards are FUBAR before you reach for your wallet. Be embarrassing to say the least if you bought two new cards and find you still have an issue.

If it isn't either of the cards, then you need to widen your net (investigation wise). Unluckily identifying problems in a PC can be a time consuming thing.

Good luck whatever you decide to do :)

thing is though. Ive put these on my test bench and ran a GPU integrity and mapping test and, im getting some wierd results from it. Really not normal from both of them. Personally, I thing hes had crappy cooling and turned it down to shut it up a little and in the process, killed these lovely looking cards...

Odd that both would go at the same time but not beyond the realms of possibility I suppose. Can you not just ask him if he's been fiddling with things like the fan speed etc?

Life... things are never simple....

he has. also there are VRAM errors all accross both boards. Maybe cooking them could be the case as this tends to work? Any opinions on this?

As to "card cooking". In my opinion it's a bit like the Indian rope trick, everyone knows about, or someone that's done it (youtube is a wonderful thing!) but no one has actually done it themselves. Bit of a last resort but up to you really. From what I can gather, even should it work (unlikely I suspect) it's not necessarily a permanent solution.

Have fun.

Thats why im really reluctant to do it. Card Cooking is a bit neadertal and akin to taking a lump hammer to a panel dent to me.

to me, what I think is that the system has got way to hot, but not enough to cause a shut down or memory dump, the VRAM has got dry joints all over an its faulted....
