Hi all,

Ive decided to get back into web design after nearly 7 years away from it, getting up to scratch with CSS but its always been the gfx side of web design that ive been lacking at.

My old boss sells software and gave me a free copy of Photoshop CS2 that they had been given to try out, however i just cant get into it and i cant find any decent tutorials online that start with the basics and move onwards.

What other programs would you recommend that i try out?

thanks in advance :)

Adobe Photoshop CS3

:)

realistically tho, you should try and get into photoshop, not only is it the best program to use, but its the most widely used. If you struggle finding decent tuts for photoshop, then you have got no chance finding tuts for any other graphics app. there are lots of tut sites for photoshop, but iv always been of the opinion that learning from tuts will give you a very limited understanding of the program, and you will find yourself using the same techniques over and over again, because you don't know anything else.

you shouldn't need tuts to learn the basics, just have a play, learn what each tool does, what effect each filter gives, and just methodically go through each tool and menu and learn the program.

I would recommend Photoshop in general but if you're looking to steer away from that, then something like Paint Shop Pro might do the business.

I haven't used it myself but I know a few people who can't 'get into' Photoshop and find that program easier to use. Even though there's not a huge difference visually.

I'm surprised you're having trouble finding tuts for Photoshop, I've always thought it's very well supported when it comes to that.

i am also a massive advocate of photoshop, however if you're trying to learn it for web design purposes, especially concept design, then you're better off going for macromedia/adobe fireworks... that's what the program is designed for and some people say its a lot easier to use...

my personal opinion tho is that you need to learn them all for different things... I'm reasonably proficient at photoshop, illustrator, fireworks and flash and believe that they are all very vital weapons in a web designers artillery ;)

scrounge yourself some work from people you know who will put some faith in you to save up for buying the adobe cs3 web premuim package ;)

oh and can't fint tuts to photoshop? you avvin' a laff? (is he avvin' a laff?) :p

I should have put the tutorial things differently, ive found absolutely **** loads of tuts, however none of the ones i have found are structured.

None start off at the beginning and work towards the advanced stuff, they always totally intermingled.

I have found a few tuts that im working through for photoshop, thanks for all the other suggestions, ill look into those now.

You really should invest in a good Photoshop book, something like the Adobe classroom in a book series should be ideal for a beginner and you can pick that up used for about £13 on the jungle site.

Or you could learn the gimp which has loads of online documentation,
and you could try something like this -
