graphics upgrade help needed

my brother in law has asked me to upgrade his graphics card from the onboard graphics chipset . i now that he will need to upgrade or increase his memory as it only has 256mb.
but i am not sure which card would be the best value/peformance for him
i know it is a [***please read the faq***] but will have more details on the spec tomorrow so will update then

Will deffo need to know more about the comp he has. Get info such as CPU, motherboard, and whether he is on AGP or PCI-E (that last one is VERY important).

Also, try and find the specs of the PSU (power supply) the computer has - they should be on a sticker somewhere on the PSU.

i was thinking of going with nvidia as i didnt think they where so hard on the psu

For some gaming i would recommend the 7600GT or X1650XT. Both of which would go fine with that CPU.

Both of these are lowe on power consumption & similar performance with the X1650XT slightly ahead i believe. Personally i would get the X1650XT as it is cheaper, otherwise their isnt much between them.
 
overclockers have great prices on them so will be happy if the psu is man enough

still looking to find out what psu is fitted as i dont have the pc at hand
