I love graphics =P

Just started first year at college wanted to show you all this, as i've worked rather hard on it today, and also to see what you think.

I'm going to do a drinks label with it ( Griz energy, 100% natural! )

+ a nice sharpened and coloured ( slightly ) version.

Made with mouse + photoshop. No stock images.

WIPS for MikeHiow

Basically i had a bg sketch , which was very rough. And then drew a load of lines in directions relating to shape of his face.

Then i tried a few diff variations ( one with smudging as you see, but it looks more like a wookie! )

Then filled it in with the hairs, used dodge + burn to add highlights.

Added a new layer with more highlights ( brush tool this time ), sharpened it a fair amount, faded etc.

Original image was 3000x2000 ish. Used mostly an 8px brush, for each hair is hand drawn!

Good start. It would look a lot better if you didn't mirror, also your proportions/perspective seem off, try working from a reference. The overall style is nice, but the aforementioned kills it a bit.

Aye the flip was because it's due in monday, and that literally halves the time!

And i'm going to try a few wee things to get rid of flatness.

Didn't want to use a reference for this one, just curious as to how it would turn out.

I would consider buying a graphics tablet if I were you, thats good stuff with a mouse, I think you'd be amazed at what the tablet will help you achieve.

I had a crappy one before, and loved it.

Going to get one of the £60 wacom bamboo things soon =)

My girlfriend (who's an animator) has a Bamboo Fun i think. The other girl I live with who studies graphics and illistration has a huge one which has a screen in it. it's basicly a really high DPI touch screen think it cost £1500

Really good effort there chap.

A few comments..

First thing I thought were the eyes are too close together..

Secondly, it is flat and if you look at a bears head, especially the eyes again, there are browed, but lose this towards the middle.. I stole your image and did some quick shading for the eyes and the cheek structure which you seem to have missed, this brought the nose forwards considerably as it should be.

Hope you do well, looks great.

Its going on a beer bottle, i assume that's why its been flattened and stretched like that, so it looks normal on a bottle. Similar to textures in games before they're wrapped around a model.
