Just had a power cut at work. IT is on UPS!!! Haha
Some pleb spiked through the main cable for our street and killed the power.
What adds to the excitement, we have a generator that won't be wired in till this evening...
Electric man came and wired us up in under 10 minutes which was fast.
Just thought I would share with you my exciting monday morning. Now lunch for an hour :D

I came in on earlies this morning to 4 servers not working.

This morning was not as chilled out as it should have been :(

I love getting power cuts here, the server room and our office are all on UPS followed by a generator that kicks in instantly, the rest of the site can be completely shut down and we (apart from the rumbling sound of the generator notifying us) can be completely oblivious :D

We have a big generator out back for situations just like this, makes a hell of a noise/stink when they fire it up!

It is rather wicked when the whole room goes dark but the computers in IT are still working and so is teh interwebs

I rather do love my job. Always wanted to help people out with computer related problems.

Update: Generator is now offline and the mains are back :D
Back to work I go

I too love my job, as in the work that i do.........but dear god i hate the people i work with, and for that reason i'm currently on the job hunt :(

Reminds me of a local council I did an audit type job for who had a funny story;
They had their generator installed for the core IT gear but there was this big ho harr about who should by the diesel for it; estates or IT. Eventually they settled their dispute and got on with their lives.

Every couple of months they would to a BC/DR test and switch to the genny to check it was still functioning until the time they actually had a power failure only to discover that all the testing had left it nearly out of fuel!

Yeah we are to test it every month but we don't have the hasstle of who has to fill it up. The company fills it up :). The Generator tells us when it needs fuel and how much it has which is excellent news so we are sorted now

In Stroud? Want an accounts job in Stonehouse by any chance? I'll swap :P

haha what's the pay like? :p

I'm tempted to apply for a job in painswick, i mean look at the entrance road to this place: http://g.co/maps/skssx surely just walking/riding to work there would be enough to put a smile on anyones face? :D only problem is the job description is far below what i would call my ability level......it's 1st line support, but for the same money im on now (more if i come higher up the "depending on experience" scale)

Pfft. It was better in the olden days when a power cut meant no work. Bloody UPS and generators spoil a good long pub lunch.

IT services 24/7 has a lot to answer for.

with mentality like that you mustn't be happy in your current job

I really am happy in my job at the moment. Full on all the time. I do mostly 1st, 2nd & 3rd line support which I love. It was nice to have a morning where it was quietness. Gives me chance to clear my desk
